ll Columbia Uotrxrv. \ 1,1 Superior Court.
J MARCH TERM, 1833.
* Present his Honor William W. Holt.
mBAII E Grand Jury of Columbia countv, for the second
week ot the present term, having taken under con
sideration the various matters tint have been presented
to our view, and which we have deemed at this lime fit
subjects for animadversion and presentment, we have
been irresistibly led to the belief, (rom facts of general
notoriety, and for reasons demonstrably dear, which
must be obvious to every observant and candid mind, that
the numerous tippling and dram shops in our country, are
, evils ofawful magnitude, and should be timely arres’ed.
It surely does not require argument to shew their do
-1 moralizing and ruinous tendencies, for we are convinced
that the rived bosoms of many affectionate parents, will
respond to tne truth of our opinions, from a remembrance
of the prostrmion of their fondest hopes in their sons, who
have fallen victims to intemperance, and not unfrequent-,
ly are induced to the commission of the most diabolical
crimes. They ar<‘ the usual haunts of the idler, the pro*
‘ sane, the drunkard, and the unprincipled gambler, who
I are constantly on the watch for opportunities to entrap
I unwary youth and all who may fall in their way. They j
i arc also the prolific sources of incalculable injury to our
slave population. By them inducements are presemed
iHt and facilities afforded, for illicit trafficking, thereby ren
dr-ring our servants unf.iiiliftd and property insecure.
I hcrefore being deeply impressed with the importance
IB of the subject, and the truth of our deductions, we do most
M earnestly recommend the Legislature of the State to
B make such enactments as may more effectually stay the
M progress of vice iti our highly favored country.
I. We recommend the repeal of the sixth section of an
■”* act passed o i the IG:h day ot Decent er, 1809, nuthoriz-
M ing the keeping of tippling shops, and we request our
1 representatives to use their best endeavors to effect this
tL pbject.
We would, also, respectfully cal! the attention of our 1
j Justices of the Inferior Court to an act passed in 1791,
f in relation to taverns and tavern rates, which makes
them the judges of the suitableness of the place, as well j
ns the ability of the person to keep a good house of enter- i
tainment.
We have, by committee, examined the records of the
Court of Ordinary, so far ns they have been under the
management of the late Clerk, (Simmons Crawford,
Esq.) and find them kept in n style highly creditable to
that officer; and, having been long sensible o r his merits
ns Clerk of that Court, we feel that we should do injus
lice to him, and to our own fi clings, were wr not to ex
press our sincere regret at Ins removal from office.
We have examined the accounts of the County Trea.
surer, and find in the hands of that officer thirty one doi
lars and eighty nine cunts, in cash, and orders now due
amounting to eight hundred and thirty four dollars and
eighty cents, leaving the County indebted eight hundred
and two dollars and ninety one cents.
We have also examined (lie records of the Superior
and Inferior Courts, and find them kept in a style credita
ble to those officers. We find three of the record books
. of the Superior Court’s office in a condition that requires
rebinding, and recommend an appropriation for that pur
pose under the direction of the Clerk.
We present as a grievance, that no revenue is derived
to the County from the many slaves in it Owned hy per
sons resoling in other Counties, and we request our rep
resentatives to use then best efforts to have this griev
ance removed.
We present as a grievance the had state of the Wash
ington road, from the big Kiokee to the Uchee creek.
We fake pleasure in expressing our gratification at the
faithful manner in which his Honor Judge Holt, and At.
tornoy General Charles J. Jenkins, have discharged their
duties during the present week.
We request that these presentments be published in
one of the Augusta papers.

LATEST HATE FROM LIVERPOOL FEBRUARY 4
LATEST DATE FROM HAVRE JANUARY 20
CHARLESTON, 'larch 25.— Colton —We notice a
revival tn the demand for this article, since our last
weekly review, particularly in the fine qualities, which
have improved in price. All descriptions over 10| cts.
will command one quarter ot a cent more than last week.
The inferior and common qualities arc dull of sale, and
if forced on the market, a slight decline would be expe
rienced. Our accounts from Liverpool arc only down
to the 24th January. At this season of the year, it is
[unusual to be 60 days without accounts from Europe,
and we may expect news from that quarter much later
in a vq.ry few days. The total sales of Upland Cotton
during this week, amount to near 4000 bales, as follows :
20 hales at 9 cents ; 110 at 9’; 101 at 91; 23 at 9§ ;
| 170 at 9A ;13 at 9|; 472 at 9|: 132 nt 9| ; 470 at 10;
I 230 at 104 > 553 at 10V ;55 at 10- ; 160 at 10 7-16;
I 112 at 104 ; 115 at 10| ;23 at 105 ;96at11; 78 at
111; 166 at 11J ;14at ll ij; and 133 choice quality at
HA cts. In Long Staple Cotton, the sales have been
to a fair extent; the principal demand appears to be for
the lower qualities of Sea Island, fine descriptions are
neglected Stock on hand Ist October, 460 bales Sea
Island, 2527 do. Upland ; arrived this week, 533 Sea
Island, 3611 Upland; previously. 16.858 bales Sen Isl
and. 121,806 do. Upland ; exported since Ist October,
including the amount on ship board not cleared, 16,131
i bales Sea Island, and 117,495, do. Upland ; remaining
on hand, 1720 bales Sea Island, 10.243 do. Upland.
Flour. —This article still continues dull. The only
sale we have heard of, was a lot of 70 bbls. Hownrd
sticet at s|, to close a consignment. We quote £>6 for
superfine, and understand that it retails at 61.
Gra n. —One cargo of C ’rn, consisting of 1600 bush
els has been disposed of this week, price and terms not
transpired. There have been no other transactions in
any description of Grain, and we make no alterations in
our quotations.
Sonr.ir*. —Tb.e sales have been limited. A lot ofMa
tanzas. “ F. D.” was disposed of ntSj ; 50 hhds. infe
rior to prime New.Or’eans, at 6to 8 : and a parcel of
good to prime New-Orieans brought 71 a8 at auction.
Coffee. —The demand tor Coffee continues good, and
about 400 bags of various qualities have changed hands
il/.is week at our quotations, which we do not vary. One
small lot of CarocoHo hr night 15 cents.
Molasses. —A lot of 24 tcs. N. Orleans at 27 cents,
is the only transaction that has < onie to our knowledge.
Spirits —Are dull of sale. The stock of Whiskey
1 on hand is large, and a reduction of about one cent, per
gallon has taken place. About 70 bills, were disposed
ot at 33 a34 cents. A small lot Apple Brandy brought
3S cents. About I isl bids. and 20 hhds. N. E. Rum
sold, price not ascertained.
Bacon, ts-r —A lot of near 20.000 lbs. Bacon have
been disposed of, cons sting of Shoulders nt 6 a 65 ;
Sides at 7, and Hams at 9}. A small lot ot Beet,
Prime and Mess sold, the former at 64, ana the latter
at 91.
March 27.— Cotton. —The demand since Monday has
continued good, and the sales h ive been to a fair extent.
We have no alteration to notice in prices—choice parcels
are still most in request, and readily command the lull
( prices of last week.
li/ce. —The demand for this article has improved since
our last weekly review, and an advance on our last quo.
tarions has been obtained. There has been but a limit
ed quantity received this week, which has prevented
sales to any great extent .Prime nnv be quoted at 2 561
a 2 621 ; and for choice parcels 2 75 is demanded, and
ni one instance, yesterday, was obtained.— Cour.
NEWBERN, (N. C) March 22.—Butter, 25 a 22;
> Candles, 12 als ; Coffee, 134 : Cotton. 9a 9 25; Hemp
per yard, 15 a 20; Flax, do. 10 a 15; Flour, bbl, 6 a 6
*0 ; Wheat, bushel, £1 a0; Corn, bbl. 2 40; Molas.
ses, gallon, 27 a 30 ; Salt, Turks Island, 50 a 55 ; do.
Liverpool, 60 a 70 ; Sugars, Loaf 16 a 18; Lump, do.
14 a 15; Brown, do. 7 a 9.
LIVERPOOL, Feb. 4.—Although the demand has
been unusually limited, there is not the slightest altera,
tion to report in the prices of any description ; the quan
tity on show throughout the week has not been more
than sufficient lor the wants of the buyers, and on Fri
day there was evidently less disposition on the part of
the holders to meet the demand, without, however, pro
ducing any sensible effect upon prices. About 1000
bales of American have been taken on speculation this
week, and2loo bales American and 300 bags Brazils
have been forwarded into the country, ui.soi l, in the
course of the last month. The sab s amo n 11,830
halos, as follows:—100 Bea Ls! t 12 ! • ■ 144 H ; 10
stained, 7d; 5150 Bowed Georg >■ CM to 8 : ; 1150 Mo
bile and Alabama, 6J to 7jjd ; 2-80 New Orleans, 6| to
9il ; 610 Pernambuco and Cera to 94d; 350 Bahia
and Maceio, 7i to Bid ; 100 Maranham, 8J to 9 Jel;
250 Egyptian, 84 to 94d ; 680 Carthigena 6d to 64d ;
31) Smyrna, 7d ; 370 Surat 44 to RJd, and 50 Bengal at
5d per lb. The imports are 18,404 bags.
HAVRE, Jan. 19.—Our cotton market continues ve
j ry active though still without improvement in prices.
The demand I expec t will last for some lime to come,
as the manufacturers are in full employ and obtain rea
dy sale for their products ; nevertheless, if the supplies
from your side should come in too abundantly, our prices
would, no doubt, experience a decline.
Cottons. —There has been, during the last ten days a
good demand for this article, without any changes in
prices. The sales consist of 484 G bales, as follows :
2304 bales Louisiana nt 89 to 115; 1320 do. Upland, Mo.
bile and Alabama at 86 to 102; 10 do Sea Island at 270,
152 do Pernambuco at 132; and 60 do. Maranham at
112 j » a ’d these prices duty paid.
Sales at Havre, Jan. 18.—1203 bales Louisiana Cot
ton. viz : 189 at 105, 67 at 102, 50 at 101, 307 at 100,
101 at 99, 281 at 98, 100 at 97, 30 at 94, and 52 at 93.
25 hhds. Porto Rico Coffee for export at 82j; 142 bags
Havana do 674.
HAVRE. Jan. 23.—The demand for Cotton has been 1
steady at fully supported prices, and our stock is again
1 reduced to less than 15,000 bales. New crop Louisiana
continues to command high rates lor the finer sorts and
a superior lot of New Uplands has reached 102 c.—
Holders are firm, and we look for no material variation
in prices, until we are more abundantly supplied.

INDIAN VEGETABLE ELIXIR.
invaluable medicine, which has of late years
jp excited so much attention in Europe, has recenily
made its appearance in this country, and with no less
claim to the title of a specific lor the cure of those excru
ciating complaints. Rheumatism, Gout and pain in the
Bones, Joints, and whether from the too free use ol
mercury or other causes. So effectual has the vegeta
ble Indian Elixir proved in all those cases in which it is re
commended, that the proprietor feels authorised to state,
it will effect a cure in ninety cases out of a hundred when
taken according te the printed directions accompanying
each Bottle. The Elixir is composed entirely of Veget
able ingredients, and may be taken without the least risk
of injury to the constitution. It is unnecessary to say
more in favor of this invaluable Remedy ; too many in this
community have already been cured by it for its virtues
long to remain unknown, and it must and will become
the universal resort of the afflicted here, as it has done in
other places. For the further satisiaction of those who
may feel disposed to doubt the efficacy ot this medicine,
the following Certificates are submitted.
This is to certify that the subscriber having been for
sometime afflicted with the Rheumatism very severely,
from which he could get no relief, until being advised to
procure some of Dr. Fitch’s INDIAN VEGETABLE
ELIXIR, which he accordingly did, and from which af
ter taking a few doses was entirely relieved.
SAML. PEARSE.
Columbia, April IGth, 1832.
This is to certify that the subscriber had been for same
years, tormented with that most excruciating disease
chronic Rheumatism, and was advised in February last to
procure from Dr. Fitch some of his Indian Vegetable
Elixir. Accordingly I procured some of it, and to my
great surprise and still greater relief, it entirely removed
the complaint, after taking a few doses, and I have not
since had a return of it.

ANOTHER Fi€T,
Edgefield, June 2d, 1832.
Mr. James Boatwright,
Dear Sir—Permit me to return you my sincere thanks
for your kind attention in delivering rny letter to Dr.
Fitch for the five bottles of his Indian Vegetable ELIX
IR. It came safe to hand, and if you are a parent, yoa
can conceive of my joy, when I inform you that my son
who has for the last six months suffered every pain from
the Rheumatism which was possible for a human being
to bear, has been entirely cured by that Elixir. I had
mourned over him and had given him up to he a cripple
for life and all the fond expectations I had anticipated from
him appeared to be blasted forever. But now to see him
walking about free from pain, and daily gaining strength,
gives me more pleasure than I can express. Several of
my neighbors have experienced immediate relief. In
only one instance have I known it to, tail, and that was a
most hopeless one; still he thinks he has experienced
benefit enough from it to induce him to persevere longer
in the use of it, at? he has not yet given it a sufficiently
fair trial. If this communication can be of any service
to my fellow beings 1 freely give my consent that you
should make such use of it as yoa think conducive to
that end. I remain ever your much obliged friend,
Anack P. Hickman.
