o”The elections in Connecticut as far as
heard from, indidate no change in the politi
cal aspect of the State.
[TrThe Maryland state elections took place
on Tuesday last. The Baltimore Sun says,
a more delightful day for an election never
i yet
“with russet mantle c’ad,
U alked o’er the dew of yon high eastern hill.”
1 Balmy as the spring with all its genial in

| flowers to deceive the acutost sense. Peace
seemed all abroad, the air was bushed in
. calm repose, and the most sensitive of all
belligerents must have felt the sympathy of
; the scene, and looked around quite hopeless
J of‘a row.” ’
After this poetical exordium, which we
quote alike for its beauty, and its applicabili-

jority.

delegates.
Majority’ against Biennial Session?, 684.
The aggregate vote is near 15.000, and |
show’s a democratic majority of 23 votes on j
the entire vote for Senate and Legislature.
Maine Elections. —The Bath Telegraph
spates, certainly two. and probably all four
j of the Lincoln Senators have been elected.
) if the former, the Whigs have six, if the
i latter eight senators elected. The Demo
crats have elected seven.
j The Great Western. —The Great Western
i was to have sailed yesterday on her regular
! trip. She lakes out between seventy and
I eighty passengers, among whom are Mr. ;
| Bancroft, our new Minister to England, with j
his family, and General Armstrong the Arne- !
rican Consul at Liverpool.
President Polk. —The New York True i
Sun savs that President Polk intends visiting j
that city about the 22d inst., and that he will ;
meet with a grand reception from the cili- j
zens.
Disqualification of Clergymen. —The Con
-1 vention, by the strong vote of 77 to 33, has
• struck out the section in the present Consti
tution, which excludes Ministers of the Gos-*
pel from holding any civil or military ofiice
in this State.— N. V. Jour of Com.
SAVANNAH, Oct. 9.— Remarks. —The pros
pect for the Cotton, crop in this State corftinues
very good. It is now generally admitted that the
caterpillar ha> done hut little injury to Uplands;
and if frost keeps off till November, a’full average
crop will be gathered. The prospect for the Sea
Island, however, has not improved, and there is
now but linle doubt that the yield will be one-half
short of an average.
Cotton —Arrived since the 2d inst. 1,590 bales
UplaiiH (1,595 by Rail Road, and 95 from Augusta
and landings on the river) and *2 Sea Islands. The
exports fur same period have been 502 bales Up
land to New York and 477 do. to Charleston—to
gether 726 bales Upland and no Sea islands; lea
ving a stock on hand and on shipboard not cleared,
of 2,839 hales Upland and 480 Sea Islands, against
1,452 bales Upland and 404 Sea Islands, at same
lime la>t year. i
The market for Upland at the close of our last
report v\ as active, with a strong tendency upwards.
This was principally owing to the light receipts
and the small quantity for sale, and also to the ex
cited state of the New York market. On Satur
day night ue received news per Great Western at
New York, from Liverpool lo tiie 11th and Havre
to the 9lh ult., w Inch produced no effect upon this
market—tlie small quantity for sale enabling hold
j ers to realise improving prices. On Tuesday night
the advices per Hibernia at Boston, from Liver
pool to the 19th and Havre to the I6th ult., were
received. Most of the offering slock had been sold
previous to the receipt of this news, and for the
few small lots daily arriving by the Rail Road, a
further advance is now asked. The improvem tit
during the week is fully 4c. per lb., and we now
quote middling at 81c.; middling fair 9c.; and fair
94 and 9fc. per lb.; we have heard of no sales at
the latter price, though v\e have no doubt it would
readily bring it. The sales of the week amount to
530 bales Upland as follows: 33 at 84; 14 at 84;
176 at 84; 54 at 84; 214 at 9; 24 at 94; and 15 b.
at 94 cents per lb.
R ce —The sales of the week amount to 400
casks at 31J -16 a 3 15-16 per hundred lbs.
Flour. —Holders are now asking SjjG a $6,25 per
bbl. for both Baltimore Howard-street,and Canal.
Bagging and Bale Rope —Sales 100 coils Ken
tucky Rope at 44, and 130 do. at 51 a 6c. per lb.;
Kentucky Bagging is worth from 11 a 12 cents;
Gunny is held at I 7 a 18c.; and Dundee, 14 a 18c.
per yard. Bale Rope is worth from 44 a 84c. for
Kentucky and Manilla.
Freights. —Are very dull in consequence of the
light receipts, and we cannot look for much ac
tivity until the river rises. The ship Scotland has
about 1,000 bales engaged fur Liverpool at 7-10 d.
per ib. fur square, and 4 J per lb. for round bales.—
Coastwise rales remain without, change.
CHARLESTON, Oct. 10— Cotton—We left
the Upland market on Friday last, in ratheraqniet
state, as buyers within a day or two had partially
withdrawn, in consequence of the high rates re
quired. On Sunday the Great Western’s accounts
came to hand, and on Tuesday the trade were put
in possession of the Hibernia’s accounts, advising
of an improvement of a farthing in Colton, which
prompted holders immediately to advance their
rates, and under the influence of a momentary ex
citement, prices went up 4 to ic.; with sales of
near 1700 hales; Wednesday, however, was a
quiet day. Holders were soon convinced that these
high figures could not be sustained, but were un
willing to yield, and the # sales were limited to some
340 bales; but on Thursday a slight concession
was accepted by many, and the transactions were
again rather heavy, bordering on 1450 hales.—
Yesterday buyers were endeavoring to buy on still
easier terms, but as sellers would not come into
their views, the former retired after having taken
between 6 and 700 bags. The transactions since
our last have been confined principally to the bet
ter qualities. The market closes at 4c. above the
quotations current in our report of the 3d instant;
and widle we would refer to them fora fair index
of the market, must, state that towards the close of
the week it was rather heavy than otherwise.—
'1 he receipts of the week reach 6250 bales and the
sales in the same time reach 5800 hales as follows:
11 at 74; 59 at 74; 62 at 8; 40 at 84; *27 at 84; 56 at

at 94; 87 at 9 9-16; 1313at9|; 406 at 91; and 100

transaction in long cotton during the week.

kets have advanced the rates with us.
Bacon. —Transactions have taken place in the
former at prices ranging from 44 to sc. as in qual

bides sold at 61c.
Lard. —Several small lots Western,in kegs, have
changed handsat 74 and 74c.
Freights. —Since our last report an American
vessel has been put on the berth for Havre, and
has commenced loading at Ic. per lb. for square
bags Cotton. Nothing up for Liverpool. We con
tinue former quotations to New York, viz: 25c.
per 100 lbs. for square bugs Colton. To Boston, 3Uc.

NEW YORK, Oct. 7.— Cotton —There has been
a very active speculative demand since our last,
several considerable lists having been sold, and,as
will be seen by our revised quotations, prices have
still further advanced. Stock on hand 36,763. —
