cil of Augusta, held at their Council Chamber, on
the 15th inst., the following Resolution was passed:
Resolved, That His Honor the Mayor, be re
quested to call a public meeting of the citizens, for :
the purpose of taking measures to aid in relieving
the citizens of Columbus, who had suflered from
the late disastrous fire in that city.

AUGUSTA CANAL.
EX I RACT from the minutes of the Board of
Managers of the Augusta Canal Company:
“ Resolved , That the Secretary, in conformity to
the provisions of the charter, give notice that there
will he a meeting of the Stockholders of the Au
gusta Canal Company at the City Hall, on Tues
day the 17th day of November next, at three
o’clock, P. M., to take into consideration, certain
proposals of the City Council of Augusta.”
In conformity to the foregoing resolution I here
by notify the Stockholders of the Augusta Canal
Company, that th re will be a meeting of the Stock
holders, at the time and place for the purpose indi
cated in the foregoing resolution.

COTTON. —There has not been much done in
our market to-day. Prices have been about the
same as those of yesterday, unlesson grades below
fair, which may be considered \(a )♦ lower than
they were on Tuesday last. The Great Britain’s j
accounts which have been due fur a day or two,
have not yet come to hand.
NEW YORK, Oct. 12. 2 P. M._Cotton con
tinues firm at the advanced rates, with moderate
sales. —Baltimore Patriot.
OCT. 12, P. M.—The Great Britain is now so
long past due that it is evident she has not sailed
upon the day appointed, or that some accident has
happened to her.
The Eastern mail which was due tins morn'ng ■
did not arrive until 34* P. M. The cause of its |
detention is not yet known, but reported to be some j
| inattention of the engineer.
The Cotton market was heavy yesterday; the
sales were small and generally at a decline of |c. j
per lb. from Thursday’s prices.
There have been large sales of Corn for ship- 1
i ment, upwards of 25,000 buthels of various quali- j
1 ties having been taken; prices unsettled, rangii g 1
i from 654 to 75 els, 4.500 bushels prime Southern
j White sold at the lat er price, and 8000 bushels
I Delaware, at 73 cents.

[ The Great Western’s advices came to hand
! yesterday, and as far as cotton was concerned,
i disappointed the general expectation. This news
i has had no other effect on our market than to sus
pend operations until the arrival of the Hibernia’s |
advices, which are now due and will probably
j reach us to morrow. The market closes, however, |
firm at the quotations we give below. Previous j
j to the receipt of the above advices the market was j
animated, sales were entirely regulated by the i
stock on sale, and prices advanced gradually du
ring the w eek fully an eighth of a cent. The sales |
of Monday were 600, Tuesday 800, Wednesday |
1 1800, Thursday 600, Friday 350, and to-day 600 ,
1 bales, in all 4750 bales. As already remarked, the
holders are firm at the follow ing rates ;

COLUMBUS, OCT. 14.- Cotton.— Since our
last, the article has come in freely, and command
ed a fair and upward price. The market on yes
terday closed at prices which have not been known
here since 1843. From 7to 8* were bid, given and
refused, as the nerve of buyers and prudence of
sellers governed the respective parties. All hands
are looking out for news by which to be governed
in their future operations.

PUBLIC AUCTION.^
There will be a public sale of BUSINESS LOTS
in the town of Cross Plains, Murray county,
Georgia, on Thursday, the 29th day of October,
instant, commencing at 10 o’clock A. M.
I hese Luts are situated on a street parallel with
the Hail Hoad, commencing at a point IUOO feet
north of the Depot building, or Freight House, and
running w ith the Kail Kuad one-half mile, within
250 feet of the track the whole distance, most con
veniently arranged for all business purposes; be
ing 100 teet w ide, anti all of it now in progress of
clearing, ditching, and grading.
Lois for Dwellings, will be offered for sale at the
same time, pleasantly situated, on a street running
parallel with the Rail Road and business street,
some 400 yards west of the same, with ample
grounds for yards in front,and gardens, out-houses,
<kc. in the rear.
Also, Farms, within a circuit of three miles of
the town, of from 10, 20, 30, to 100 or 200 acres, of
the choicest tillable lands in Murray county.
The State Rail Road, being now finished to within
21 miles of this place, it is the intention of the Direc
tion of the Road, that it shall be in full operation
to this point in all (he month of January, 1847, con
necting a line of Rail Roads to Augusta. Georgia,
and Charleston, S. C., of 400 miles, and a line to
Macon and Savannah, Georgia, of about the same
distance; the mail coming through from New York
in four days, ami only thirty hours from Savannah,
Ga., and Charleston, S. C.
That Cross Plains is to he a place of much trade,
none can doubt, who w ill refer to the map of the
line of Rail Roads terminating there from the
south, and the old and important market roads, ex
tending to it from Tennessee, on the north.
For location, it is the summit level of the Rail
Road, between the Oustananla River and Mill
Creek, distant from each other some 20 miles; it is
bordered on its eastern and western sides, with
; beautiful ranges of hills, and is considered ilia
| most healthy spot, in one of the most healthy re
gions, of the whole Cherokee country.
Merchants wishing to change their present bu
siness locations, or seeking business; Mechanics,
and those looking for healthy locations to settle in,
and desirous o( building up a res;>ectable and per
manent community, w e venture to predict, will be
well repaid for a visit to the place, on the day of
; sale.
j Terms—Choice of lots to the highest bidder,one
half cash, one-quarter in (J montlis, with interest;
the balance in 12 months, with interest. Forcasli
in lull, (which w ill in all cases be preferred) guar
antee title deeds will be deliverable on the day of
