MOBILE, Nov. 25.— Cotton. —The inquiry in
this market for some three or four weeks past has
been to a great extent confined to middling
and middling fair cottons, and hence the
• difficulty of giving relative quotations. The fi
gures we gave in our last w ere. perhaps a. shade
h ghcr in some of the grades liiau were warranted
by actual transactions. Certain it is that on V\ ed
tiesday following the close of our last commercial
week, both factors and brokers became convinced
•that prices in this market were ruling 100 high—
being relatively higher than any other in the coun
try. Buyers stood aloof, and only operated w here
.advantages were decidedly in their favor. The
.-ales of Wednesday were 2'k), Thursday 200, and
Friday 200 biles. Up to this time a decline of
fully i cent was established, middling and “good
middling” cottons being quoted at 94 a 91c. Bal
nrday the sales were 300 hales, at same rates. —
Monday, later foreign accounts p--r Great V\ es
it rn were received in this city; but although ad
vvising of another small advance in prices in Liv
erpool, they had no other effect here than to quick
en the market a little. The sales reached 700
bales. Yesterday the sales were estimated at 7< 0
bales, and the only change perceptible in the com
plexion of the market, was ihe manifestation of
some anxiety, on the part of some holders, to sell.
The eastern mail failed, and no additional details
of the steamer’s news came to hand. The opera
tions of the week foot up 2300 bales. The buy
ing has been partly on Spanish acetMUiL and part
ly to fill up vessels now on the berth. We quote

khns —The Exports of Grain from this port,
| from the Ist to 24th inst. have reached up
wards of 750,000 bushels, and of Flour 83,-
000 barrels, which reduced lo Grain, would
give an aggregate of a million one hundred
thousand bushels, worth about one million
dollars. When an estimate is made of the
number of ships required to transport this
: vast amount of produce, together with other
| la rue quantities of Cotton, Lard. Tallow,
Beef, Cheese, Ashes, &c. &.c. the high rate
of freights will be easily accounted for. It
1 is very questionable if such rates can be
! sustained for a length of time, and it becomes
! proper !o consider whether good policy would
; not dictate less urging upon the part of
j shippers to get produce forward at once.

The Weather. Thanksgiving. Cut?
winter set in whit a snow storm on Wed
nesday n g 4 whc’i extended from South of
Washington lo the Northward as far as
heard from.
The Telegraph wires were broken and
communication stopped in all directions;
most of the mails were retarded and several
due on Thursday have not yet come lo hand.
There is some doubt, about the condition
of the Canal if the weather should become
mi d immediately, as is now the prospect. —
If the cold should remain as severe as it was
yesterday and last night, there is no doubt
that the business of the season is at an end.
The snow was a foot deep at Albany on
Thursday evening.
F. 8. The Telegraph. —The wires on
the Southern line are in operation. The
Boston line does not operate. The Albany
line is broken at Poughkeepsie.
[From the Albany Argus of Thursday.]
The Storm The Canal and River—The Mads.
—Early yesterday morning a sn.»w set in from the
West, and continued throughout the day—the snow
falling to the dep'h of several inches.
'Phe thermometer, w Inch at 8 yesterday morning
marked 33, fell to 27 at 3 in the afternoon.
An immediate close of the canal navigation must
be expected, unless the weather speedily moder
ates. The quantity of snow which has fallen, not
only chills hut thickens ihe water tosuch a degree,
as to require hot little frost to render the canal im
passable. The canal closed last year on the 29th
November.
We had no day boat yesterday. The. day line is
no doubt withdrawn for the season. The river
may continue open for several days. Last year it
closed December 3d.
The Eastern noon train was in at its usual hour
yesterday. The V\ esteru train was only about two
hours behind its usual time. The evening train
from Boston had not arrived at 10 last night.
C ommunication by Telegraph with New \ ork
wa« suspended; owing probably to the storm.
« I Correspondence of the Phil. Public Ledger.]
Washington, Nov. 25, 1346.
There has been a great noise about privateers
and letters of marque. No official news has yet
reached the Biate Department of this pretended
move of the Mexican government. All that the
Department and ihe President know about the
matter is. that the Spanish government has, du
ring all their difficulties with Mexico, uniformly
manifested the kindest disposition towards the U.
States, and the firmest resolution to adhere to the
stipulations of our treaty with her, which prevents
the subjects of His or Her Catholic M ijesty from
availing themselves of letters of marque from any
power whatever* against the property "f the citi
zens of the United States, and provides for the
punishment of the offender, who is to be considered
by Imth parties in the same category as a pirate.-
Our merchants and navigators need not therefore
he particularly alarmed about these three hundred
letters of marque.
Money Matters in New York. —The Tribnne says:
—“'Plie Money Market is becoming rather more
stringent. As the time approaches for the new
Tariff to go into operation, importers are m iking
preparations to pay a large amount of duties on
goods now’ in bond. The demand for money is
consequently larger, and the offerings at Bank be
gin to increase. Tne operation of paying in the
subscriptions to the new Loan, has temporarily
hampered the operations of the Banks. The Sub-
Treasurer is, however, rapidly letting loose the,
eagles and sovereigns he has raped up in the Cus
tom House.’’
