The IWegong 'etter was answered bv the

dignified, and highly crediiab e to his imlivi- 1

** Vou mention articles for a treaty, some
of which the two republics might reasona
bly agree to with iioilor to both. Entirely
ignorant of what those articles contain. I
can of course express no opinion on the sub
ject.
■‘l am pleased that you consider mv com
munication to yon kind and conciliatory. Jf
was certainly so intended. Personally, 1 I
have always sincerely regretted the ex.deuce
ol the war; and now do still more, because
I cherish the hope, that under the Federal
System, should ti be honestly maintained,
Mexico may recover from all her misfor
tunes, and her people may become prosper
ous and happy. It is one ol the most tin- j
natural events in history, that the two Re
publics which might do each other so much
good in peace, should be engaged in war.—
fclill, in opposition to your opinion, 1 must
continue to believe that ibis war was forced
upon the United Stales, and I know that we
engaged in it most reluctantly.
** For tlie character of .Mexico throughout
the world, tins war has had one good effect.
No person can hereafter doubt the valor of
her troops, in every engagement they have
proved themselves to be men.”

CHERRY. —The extraordinary success attending ;
the use of this medicine in diseases of the lungs, [
and the many singular cures it has effected, hav- i
ing naturally attracted the attention of many phy- |
sicians, as well as the whole fraternity of quacks, i
various conjectures and surmises have arisen re
secting its composition; some physicians have
supposed it to contain iodine, other ignorant pre- i
tenders say it must contain mercury, and to some i
such «u Instance they eacli attribute its singular j
efficacy. As such opinions are altogether erro- j
neons, ami calculated lo prejudice many persons
against it, we PLEDGE Ol R HONOR, that it j
contains nothing of this kind, or anything the |
least in jurious; on the contrary, it is composed of
the must simple substances, the principal of which ;
are the extracts of Jar and wild cherry bark, and i
the whole secret of its efficacy consists in the mode j
by which they are prepared.

AUCirsTA MARKET.
Tuesday night. Dec. I. 184 G,
COTTON—A lew hundred bales have been
soli! to-day, and in some instances sellers had to
accept of lower rates. The range of prices is i
from 61 (SSic. for round and square hales, viz: Gs
fS)Bic. for the former, and 6J,®cic. for the latter.
Principal sales 7i,a)3i in round, ami in square
packages. 1 lie sales of ilie week have been very
light, and the receipts also have fallen off con
siderably. The river continues in fair boating
condition, hot the high rates of freight in our sea
ports, prevent purchasers from operating to any
extent, until there is a better supply of vessels.
We would remark that choice Cotton in square
hales, would tiring a fraction above our highest
quotation, hut there is scarcely any of it to be
found in our m irket at this time..
