planted last spring, within his field of col
lon, a piece of ground in indigo; thinking
that it would yield more indigo than
"ould he necessary to furr.ish his family,
he ploughed a part of it up, and pul in
cotton. 'Thus ploughing it before it had
germinated, lie scattered the seed over
his cotton land, and many stalks of it j
grew with the cotton. When the worms i
l»e<fan to devour the cotton, he found v to
his surprise that the slocks near the indi- I,
go were untouched hv them. They left,
or rather kept away, from the rows near
the indigo patch. The odor from the in
digo plant is known to he pungent and
disagreeable; this may have repelled the
worms, if they have the sense of smell, as
all sensible worms ought to have—jV.

the Mediterranean, to make the. strength of our i
country known and respected by the superiority of |
our construction of armed vessels.
On Sunday morning last, at his residence in
Milledgeville, Capt. \VM. F. SCOTT, an old
and highly respected citizen, to the regret of a
large circle of friends and acquantiUlces, and the
profound sorrow of his family.

seven or eight years 1 have not enjoyed perfect
health. In the Spring of 1814 1 had some cough, 1
j was then in Worcester county, Mass., ami applied
to a Physician, who gave me some medicine, but
it did not relieve me. I was not able to work dur
ing the summer. Last fall I was much worse, so
reduced by coughing and sweating nights, that I
was obliged to take my room! My physician tried
in vain to remove my cough, and restore me to
health, but 1 did not expect to recover; ] however,
concluded to try Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry;
I was then troubled with very frequent spells of
coughing. Highland day; before I had taken one
bottle, my cough was easier; I continued to lake
tlie medicine until I was able to leave my room,
j have taken several bottles, and 1 think Wistar’s j
Balsam of Wild Cherry has cured me; at least I
feel as well, and as strong as I have for twelve i

1 MOBILE. Nov. 28.— Colton. —Since the date of
our last review there, have been added to the re
ceipts at this port 6.555 hales, while there has
been an export of 791 hales, leaving the stock on
h ind and on shipboard 19.166 bales. At the same
period last year the stock on hand was 37,934
bales.
The effect of tlie advices by the Great Western
1 and Acadia, will lie seen in our quotations, which
are reduced generally about ic. per lb. The sales
j of the week sum up 4000 hales. The week closes
without much animation. The market is quiet
and rates pretty steady, though some factors seem
anxious to part with their stocks. 'The principal
purchases have been made for the English and
Spanish markets, the increased receipts furnish- ;
ing a widerscope for selections.

LOSS OF THE STEADIER ATLANTIC.
A telegraphic despatch was received lima
New York this morning, announcing the
wreck of the magnificent steamer Atlantic,
on Thursday night last, on her trip from Nor
wich to New York. Bhe had on board sixty
two persons at the time of the wreck, forty
of whom were lost, and amongst the number
the commander of the steamer, Caps. Dun
stan. She was wrecked on the Sound, at
Fisher’s Island. The following are the

She was a new boat, and one of the most

ister at the Court of Fiance, arrived in this
city on Saturday evening last, accompanied
by bis niece Airs. Ellis. He remained here
on Sunday and lelt in the evening train of

CHARLESTON Dee. 2. — Cotton —There was
j a fair inquiry for Upland Cotton on Saturday last,
i but holders generally were demanding rather" full- ,
er rates than were current at the close of the last 1
week, and buyers retired after having taken some
i 300 bales. On Monday there was a better under
standing among dealers and the/transactions were i
increased to about 2300 bales. Yesterday some j
activity prevailed, and the operations reached
fully 3400 bales. On Monday prices would occa
sionally fluctuate in favor of the purchaser, but
throughout yesterday tlie quotations given in our
report of the 28ih ultimo were fully sustained. The
sales comprise 0126 bales as follows:—11 bales at i
