as Gen. Taylor returns from Saltillo. Who
he will leave there to garrison the town, we
do not know, and who at Mon'crey. We are
as yet ignorant on all these points. However,
Goal. Wool not being able to go farther than
Monclova, it will cause a change in Taylor’s
operations. Genl. Quitman said last eve
ning at our tent (for he is intimate with our
< apt a in, who, let me assure you, is respected
by everyone and loved by his company) that
this failure of Wool’s expedition would ena
ble Gen. T. to prosecute his intentions on
San Luis Potosi.and our motions are depend
ant on those of the enemy. No one can say
more than that it Is probable—and that proba
bility is that Sanfa Anna will attempt to lake
advantage of the division of onr army on the
march and make an attack on a detachment at
a time, (l refer to our march upon Tampico,)
which he could easily do. The Mexicans
march with ease thirty miles a day and are not
encumbered with trains, for they issue an order
to each province to have ai slated places and
stated times, provisions, so when thev reacii
a place they are certain of meeting a depot,
whilst with us, even though we forage, our
train must be large and we leave our def Hit
behind. But we are not afraid of him, as
Mosgrove remarked after he had heard that
we would probably have a fight on the march,
if not at Tampico. I dont want to go home
before we meet the enemy in battle, for I
would feel mean, is the sentiment common
to all.
With the exception o r chills and fever,
our regiment enjoys perfect health. Phinizy
and Dill were sick when I was at Camargo,
bit they have recovered. Baker and Wright
were also, but they too are well, and the
prospect of a fight, together with the splendid
scenery and fine climate and pure spring
water create sensations in each soldier’s
bosom, that cause Col. J. much trouble to
prevent them from committing the ntimilita
rv act of shouting frequently; and if it once
commences t he whole camp sends forth long
and loud halloo*. To-morrow, if I can make
up a party, I will visit all the places of inter
est in or near Ihe town, i desire to go on
the mountains, see the neighbouring ran
ches, &-c. Lee W. is much liked by his compa
ny and makes a good officer. He looks very
well, and has enjoyed fine health. I was glad
lie was elected for my own sake. Independ
ent of various other reasons which caused
me to rejoice, he was moral and possessed
none of those vices so common every where,
thus enabling me to find a congenial spirit of
my own age.
Imposter. —We understand that a person
signing himself J. Benj. Weld, has been repre
senting himself to be the agent of this paper in
Georgia, and that he has made numerous
collections in Columbus and the adjacent
county, for which he has given receipts as
agent of the Picayune. We have no such
person in onr employ. We have an agent,
in Mississippi and Louisiana, of the name of
J. Burt Weld, who signs his name J. B. Weld;
but lie has not been in Georgia for many
years. We fear a swindle has been pul upon
some of our subscribers. Our agents are all
advertised in our paper—we have no others.
—A. O. Picayune, Dec. 3,
San/a Anna . —The New Orleans Bulletin
Fays; “A good deal has been said aboul the
mode in which Santa Anna passed through
our blockade. We slate, on authority that
we know to be undoubted, that he produced
jio passport or paper of any kind, but when
the steamboat he was on board was boarded
by the First Lieutenant of the Bt. Mary’s, the
latter officer told him the Commodore had
orders to let him pass. Nothing more took
place,”
mrlt is staled that a corps of Volligenrs,
and al-o a Rocket Corps, will form a part of
the detachment of the Army which General
Fcolt will have under his command. They
will be useful in the attack on Vera Cruz.
