spected citizens. For some years he has been
a martyr to disease, which has at length ter
minated his career of probity, a virtue which
characterized all his dealing witli his lellovv

Three Pecks if Snakes —At Birmingham, ;
('onn., on I'nestiay of last week, some young !
men, while hunting in the woods, discovered
•a den ol crawling reptiles,counting seventy
six in number, and measuring three pecks,
dry measure. They were too much chilled 1
to be harmful, and were put in a box to he j
sent to the New York “market.’*

by factors. The sales have been about 1200 bales.
NEW YORK. Dec. 8. 21 P. M.—Freights, Liv- I
erpool 4s 6d and ISJ and 7-l6d for square cotton.
Evening. —The sales of cotton for the day are ■
2.500 bales, and prices hive stiffened so that an
I advance of 1-3 and even 1-1 ct. lb. has been
realized in some cases.

same time are 14.473 bales. The transactions are

same period have been 5.979 bales Upland to
Liverpool. 1,170 bales Upland to Havre, and 634
hales Upland and 18 Sea Islands to Charleston, —
together 7,783 baLs Upland and 18 Sea Islands;
leaving a stock on hand and on shipboard not
cleared, of 36,208 hales Upland and 728 >ea Is
lands, against 10.959 hales Upland and 196 Sea Is
j lands, at same time last year.
The market opened with a good demand on Fri
day. which continued np to Wednesday. Prices
have been gradually improving, and for qualities
below, fair, are fully ic. per lb. higher than those
week. Yesterday, owing to the non arrival
of the foreign news, now due. and the extreme
rates demanded by holders, there was hut little do
ing. The sales of the week amount to 6.738 hales
, Upland at rather irregular prices, but the follow
ing quotations are about the closing sales :
