7583 bales —making an addition to stock of 7615 1
bales, and leaving on iian t, inclusive of all on
shipboard nut cleared on me lith instant, a stock
of i 4 1,902 bales.
Our last semi-weekly report left the Cotton mar
ket in a dull and drooping stale, and we had ucea
stun to reduce our figures ally an \ of a cent, pur- j
liculariy on grades ranging from Good Middling to
Fair. On Wednesday the, market again opened
quietly, but as the day advanced some two or three
new buyers came forward, and took several con
siderable parcels, ami at the close of business it
was found that fully 9800 bales had changed hands,
at about lite rates of the day previous. On Thins
day there was a good enquiry, but the reduction in
lite stock offering and me consequent firmer pu.-t
--ilion of tue market, prevented buyers from opera
ting with the same facility as on me day previous,
though sales were effected so lite extent of about ,
i oOuu hales, holders having rather the advantage [
in prices, without any positive advance over our i
figures. Yesterday but a light business was done, j
, both buyers and sellers being generally disposed to
learn the char icier of the European advices per
j Camoria, winch are considered due here to-day or i
! to-morrow, and we cuuid learn of sales to tlie ex- j
tent of only about fOut) bales, making a total for
| the past three days of 16,830 bales the greater part
of w hich has been taken for England, with some
! parcels for the Continent, and for our Northern
; ports, 'f ile tolal sales of the week are 21,300
1 (rales. As regards prices we cannot discover that
j there is any improvement in the actual tales paid
i •urlieiently marked to warrant an advance in our
figures, though it is proper to remark that the tnar
ket, being materially relieved by the rather large
: transactions on Wednesday and Thursday, has
I assumed a much firmer position, and that it would
[ lie difficult al the moment, perhaps, to purchase to I
touch extent, even at our outside quotations, not
withstanding that exchanges rule low, while
freights have further improved l-lod to Liverpool,
'i’he total receipts at all the port since Ist Septem
ber are 228,164 bales, against 325,826 bales at same
I uate last year; showing a decrease 38,602 bales.
And tlie falling off in the receipts at ail the ports,
j up to the latest dales, as compared with last year,
1 is 62,3ij0 hales. In the fatal exports from tlie Uni
; ted States to foreign countries, as compared with
; the same dates last year, there is a decrease of
j 133,638 bales to Great Britain, 1 1,823 to France,
1 and 751 ts other foreign ports. For some two weeks
, past the receipts at tins port haae considerably ex
j ceeded those of the corresponding period last year,
< and it may be proper to remark,in explanation of tins ;
! fact, that a material portion ot the recent arrivals
i has been from Tennessee, North Alabama, and in
| terior portion es Louisiana and Mississippi, which
! sections were nearly excluded from tins market
; during the same period last season, by the unnavi
i gable state of the rivers.
