92 Mr. CiiabH.es Gava.n DtrFß'Y.—This distinguish- • eu Irishman arrived in Sydney on Wednesday last i by the Wonga Wonga from Melbourne. We be- : lieve U hi- intention to pr< • cd shortly to the | interior :>n private business, after which he has in- ' timitted his intention of returnin g to Ireland. There j will be much rejoicing when he lands on the shore | of that country 7 for which he worked so hard, and ’ for which he did so much. Poet, orator, states- j man, and, above all, true patriot, ardent lover of Ireland, Charles Cavan Duffy has earned for him- i self a high place in the esteem and love of all Irishmen. and although, he chooses to enrich an other colony than this with his talents and services, his countrymen of New South Wales are not be hind those of Victoria in the, respect they bear him. We cannot point to services rendered to our colony but w; think ot M3, and we remember Duffy of the Nation. We are unable to speak positively of our honored countryman’s intentions, or the length of his stav in Sydney, but we are certain his counfrvinni will not allow this occasiou j to oass without showing their appreciation of Mr. Duffy’s services to old Ireland. It is seldom we. have so distinguished a visitor, but though ho said that his st,ay in Ireland will be but two y ;rs, cir "inistunces mr arise which will give Ireland the -rvifces of one of her most devoted sons, but. pre tent us from ever seeing Charles Cavan Duffy again. While wo shook: rugre it for oursehos, we would rejoice at it for the sake of our native land. —Sydney Fireman, third 9. Tub Dublin Evening .'fail is of the class of pa triots that does not care to see Ireland abused by strangers, though by no means sparing of its own invective again- the country. The feeling is one that we do not altogether dislike, and we there a - th following reference to Mr. Senior's tig. r cilious review of the condition of the country. '1 he Taxation Committee, it says, “on Friday allowed Mr. Senior, an English official in Ireland, to dilate at enormous length on the ‘barbarous’ nature of the country, which, notwithstanding the advant ages of his position, he evi Ictitly knows but par tially and re-.'.,-Is with a jaundiced eye. We admit the truth of tnnnv of tbj statement- to the discredit of Ireland, which even Irishmen are sometimes forced to make; but it is most offensive to every Irishman that at- English official receiving pay in Ireland, should come forward thus to magnify the fault.-' of our people, so as indirectly to u orifv all classes of his own countrymen for their wealth, intelligence, industry, or well-covered backs, and to draw such a picture of this portion of her Ma jesty’sdominions as is calculated seriously to injure us at a criti :al juncture when Engli finding its way into our manufactures.” j Cork Examiner. _________ .. —■s*. . Nor af&ct to be witty, nor to jest so as to wound the feelings of another. To say as little as possi ble of yourself and ot those who are near to you. To aim at cheerfulness without levity. With the liberty transmitted by their forefathers they havi inherited the spirit to defend it. Tiie choice between w ar and abject submission is be fore them. To such a proposal, brave men with arms in their hands can have but one answer. They cannot barter manhood for peace, nor tho right of self-government for life or property.
