a (air demand for Upland at previous prices. Hut
since then tho enquiry has moderated, and hol
'dets, generally, to ell’eclsales, have been willing
to concede aqcaitcrlo a half cent oil last week s
quotations, attributable to largo receipts, and an
adrtneein freights: no later European intelli
gence having been received. The sales ol the
weak will amount to 5570 bales, at from 8 to 12
cents. In Sea island we report sales of 25 bales
svbita at 23 J a 20, and 23 sin ned at 10 a 15.

THE LOWNDESTILLE AC ADEMT.
WAN opened on (he first Monday of tho pres
ent month, under the superintendence of
Mr. Jno. N. Young, where pupils will he instrue
ted in the Greek aad Homan Languages and all
the branches of English literature usually taught iu
Academies.
Mr. Y’oung is a graduate of Oxford College,
Ohio, though a native oft his district. The Trus
tees of the Institution feel themselves tally authoris-,
ed to recommend him as being well qualified to i
discharge the duties in which he has engaged. Ha
has not been long enough irom College to become
rusty iii» the 'angunnes, and part of that lime he
has been employed in teaching, and lias given full
sntislaction as to his qualifications. Tho Trustee*
also have the satisfaction to announce to the public
that they have engaged Mr. Abraham Cunning
ham to leach the Tower brunches, and can with
propriety recommend him as a first rate English
teacher, having tried him two years previously,
Tho general supervision ol tho School will de
volve upon the principal teacher Mu. Young, who
together with the Trustees, will use every exertion
to manage the School with that kind of method
and discipline which will afford to the students both
moral and intellectual advantages.
Lowndosville is situated 18 miles west es Abbe
ville village, and near the Double bridges on Ro*.
Ky River, on a high, dry and sandy ridge, with
good water and is perfectly loalthy. There being
no stagnant woters, or sluggish streams for sornfe
miles distant, it is therefor- cut of the reach oftne
noxious effluvia whic h is .10 destructive to health in
many other places. Two ol the Trustees have
practised physic for mmy years in tho auiglibor
i.ood, and can speak knowingly of tho superior
licahiiiuhiesß of the place. Lowndesville is more
over situated about five miles distant from several
valuable mineral springs, which have recently been
pnronased by a company who expect to have pre
parations m roidinoss for tho reception of visitors
the ensuing summer; which will afford a valuable
retreut lor a lew weeks, to any whose cons til utions
may req lire it. Good boarding can be had in the
village and in the neighborhood, ut quite conven
ient distances, on reasonable terms.

ate conviction, that in Farmers’ Academy, under
ns present prudent arrangements, the subscriber. -
will be able to do a larger amount of gotd, with:

been able to do, in MSitroe. '1 he new. institution
will consist «i two branches in separate hour's, on»-
for males, and tho other for fcmules. A competent
female teorher will be employed, to soliduot. the
female branch, under the direction of the principal,
teacher ; but tho advanced classes in that branch
will make their recitations to the principal. Tha
two Academies are located at 0 short distance from,
each other, and the teacher’s dwelling centrally be
tween them ; and disbelieved that sued measures,
have been adopted as wilt secure tho advantages,,
without the disadvantages, of a mixed school. AIL
the principal vices, and fashionable extravagancies-,
ol town and village schools, are effectual?/, txolud -
ed from this establishment. The Academy is fur
nished trith an extensive Chemical, Philosophical
and Astronomical apparatus, together With a mum,
her of large and elfgant maps, and other Wil/tietr
for the promotion of education. In view of the lo
cality of Farmers Academy situated as it ioinono
of the most pleasant and healthful sections es the up
country, together with its other advantages, the sub—

demy for five years past, will continue in charge
ol the same the ensuing year. They aonsidcr the j
character of the institution under her charge so ‘
well established, that it is unnecessary to say any
thing in praise. Suffice it to say, she lies given gen
eral satislanion to Iter employers, as wellin advan
cing her pupils in education as in the improvement
of their morals. They ask the continuance and
patronage which hns been generally given, the next
year, with a pledge that nothing shall be wantiag*
on tho part of the 'fere her or Trustees, to give satis
faction. Ihe prices of tuition lo be the same as has
been. Boarding from $7 to $8 pet month, first
term will commence the first Monday in February..

The branches cf education usually taught in other
1 academies, will be taught in this institution, and
1 students who wish to enter college, may be pre
-1 pared here for admission. The prices of tuition ants
board are as low here as in any other academy 111
the same section ol country. Ruckersvillo, near
which this academy is situated, is one of the most
flourishing and healthy towns in the upper country..
; There are eight dry good stores in the village, and
three good boarding houses. The academic building
fur the male school is now, commodious, and fur
| islied with a large and wall toned bell. A largs
building for a female academy will hava been fin
ished belore Christmas, and is expected to go into
operation tho Ist of January ensuing. Both thee*
[ buildings are not more limn a quarter of a mile from
- two large churches, where there is regular preach
ing. A N'abhath school was kept the present yeer,
1 under the superintendence of the Rector, and will
■ recommence as soon as the weather will permit.—
1 he Rector is in the habit of reading da ly a portion
of the scriptures to the students, followed by a lew
questions and remarks on tho most interesting parts
■ read.
Evety exertion will he made lo preserve the mor
’ n sol the pupils, and no student who isnotperson
ally known, will be admitted, without a certificate
ol good moral character, from his last teacher, or
’ some one who is known to the parties or teacher.
Dr. Reese’s charrcterasa teachnroflong experi
ence and ability is well established, and is favorably r,
known in Carolina; but for the satisfaction
