D*xa St n—The plan you have adopted in your
School, of combining Military inatiuction and
Drilling, i* worthy of all commendation, ami 1
trust your example will he generally followed. 1
am autiafied from my observation and experience
that the elementary principle* of the Military ar,
can in no way ha so effectually imparted to tin
giant body ofthe people. In our system of gov
ernment every citizen i* deemed to he a soldier;
and the education of n young man is very incom
plete if, when ho has entered upon the threalre of
active life, ho shall not have been taught to de
fend hia righta ua well as to know them.
I am. Sir, your ob’t. sen ant,

SCOTTSBOROUGH, (1 80.
HE exercises of this institution will ho re
turned on Monday the Kith January, 1837.
From tho flattering encouragement we have re
ceived during the present year, wo have made
every exertion, and have succeeded in engaging
the services of first rate teachers in the several
departments of the institution.—They bring with
them testimonial* of religious character and liter
nrv attainments from many of the most influen
tial gentlemen in tho United States.
We have mads arrangements to have a Stew
ard’s Hall studied to the Institution, at the head
of which will b* Mr*. D ESTE, an elderly
lady, whose domestic habits nud experience in
the government of young ladies, are very high
ly extolled. We have been led to this slop,
from tha inconvenience which young ladies
experience in going to and coming from their
hoarding housea during inclement weather; from
the lime they low, owing to tho domestic arrange
ment* of other houses, not corresponding with
our own; for the sake of having' all tho young
ladies, at all limes, under the supervision of tho
teacher*, as many of them ate disposed to neglect
their studies, ami become careless of their man
ners and language when not subjected to such a
check ; and, finally, the teachers cannot feel Ihetn
selves av responsible for those who board else
where, as for those who board with them. We
no not wish to be understood ** dictating to our
1 patrons, hut respectfully submit the above hints
I to their sober consideration,
A contract has been made for having comple
ted early 111 the ensuing year, a Female Gymna
sium, for physical education.
Young 1a.1i.-s who may desire to speak the
French language, will have uncommon advanta
ges afforded them here. Mrs. D’Esle was educa
ted in France—is a lady of superior accomplish
ments, and speak* French and English with e
ipial facility. The Principal and his brother like
wise speak the language.
