The okl days of grasshoppers and drouth are .almost forgotten in the pros.- peronx Kansas of to-day: although a citizen of Codell, Earl Shanfburg, has not yet forgotten a hard time he en countered. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were devo ted largely to examination exer cises for the purpose of making up the monthly report of each pupil. The attendance is not as large as it could and should be, but our town is to be congratulated upon having so excellent literary school. Back up the school with your influence as well as your children. -The commitment trial of Ar tl>ur Davis, the slayer of John Vjj. Gillis, was held at McDonald )I,st Saturday, and was bound oyer to tiie Superior Court in a bond of *b,oCo.t>o. The State was represent'd by the Solicitor- Genernl and the Defendant by C. A. Ward and Lankford & Dicker soil. 1 The congregationalist of this section held their annual confer ence at Union Hill church, four miles southeast of town, last Fri day, Saturday and Sunday. The meeting was a tliorougly sueess ful and interesting one, and on Sunday the congregations w. re especially large, ' The people of Union Hill community are wide ■lj v known for their liberal hospi tality, and when they undertake to entertain a meeting it is never 1 half-way dona. Thar 1 ware quite number of ministers, and lay then present from other sections of the country. The time is not far distant when the lands around Union Hill will oa sought for at high prices, because it is splen did farm lands and the commu nity a delightful one to live in. A large number of the people jftf tpwn and community are at- Court at Doug las this week, and experiencing konm of the difficulties of living from sixteen to thirty miles from the Ccu ity Capital, with nothing hut private conveyances as means of transportation. Is it any won der the people of this section are making the fight of their lives for a new county and the benefits they would derive from it. This is too fast an age for such con ditions to continue much longer. “Pull for Pearson or pull out’’ should be the slogan of every elt. izen of the town. You can afford to divide on other matters but never in in your loyalty to the town. Our town was saddened last Friday morning by the death of Mrs. Minnie McNeal, consort of Judge F. E. McNeal, who had been sick with a complication of diseases for several weeks. Her death was rendered doubly sad by the fact that the sorrowing husband is left with six small Jchidren, the eldest a boy not ex feeding .-leveri years and the youngest an infant only a few "Weeks old, to care for both as a father and a mother. Mrs. Mc- Noal was the eldest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lovitt Harrell and was reard in Coffee county. She was a member of the Baptist church and lived an exemplary Christian life, Besides her hue | band and children a large circle of immediate relatives and scores of friends mourn her departure. The interment took place at Ar llie church, nine miles north of Pearson, on Saturday, Elder John F. Smith officiating. Elder Smith, Congregational Ist, preached a very acceptable sermon at the Methodist church Sunday night. His theme was “A lean soul in a fat land. ' evolved from the incident of .Pharaoh’s dream of the “Fat kiue aiuPthe lean lone.” Mr. Smith s home is in Atlanta. Next Tuesday is the day set by our City Fathers for the. election on the question of issuing .‘school .bends’’ with which too faise the .necessary funds to pro vide the town with an up-to-date school building and equipment. No Voter should be so careless as to let the day pass without ex pressing his appro val of the pro ject, by casting bis ballot in fa vor of bonds. This is meth od pursued by other towns of less pretensions than Pearson to s >cureschool buildings and equip ments, why not Pearson take ad vantage of it; the money arising from the sale of bonds, principal and interest, can be paid back in thirty years and nobody feel it, even though the town should grow no larger than it is now. But in accordance with the usual order of things, the erection and eq u i pin en to f an u p - to - da to sc I tool building and the establishment of a first class school would cause the town to grow and properly Have You Heard Afecut The New BiM? r - • We are still bottling Soda Water of all descriptions, and would like for you to try our _. , •“TOPAZ «Bi ALE/’ But he sur. it is mad >by us.
