HOME CIRCLE OEPABTMEHT Crude Thoughts as They fall From the Editorial Pen —Pleasant Evening Reveries. Things We Can’t Afford Our mothers taught us very imperfectly the distinction be tween spending and investing; and if we read the signs of the times aright, the sins of the moth ers wi'l be visjted upon t’ e da ghttrj even unto the third and fourth genera Mon. Of course we have a vogue idea that “lie that giv. th to the poor lende h to the Lord, and He will repay him again;” but have we any ad equate idea of the safety and the blessedness of the investment of giving? We do not refer to gold and silver alone. Can the gentle sex afford to spend so much time in fashionable calls and fashionable parties and fashionable dress and invest so little time among the sick, the sad and the suffering ones in our midst? Can they af ford to spend so much time and money on extravagance of dress and in luxuries and invest so lit tle papers, books and lectures? We can count families by the score, now, in the Twentieth Cen tury, whose reading matter is confined to a cheap religious ] u - lication and a weekly local paper. Your children positively waste much of the time in long even ings, which if invested in good papers, meTines and books, and wou prove to them <x haustless mm.; or wealth and hap piness. Now as the long winter evenings approach, ask your selves if you can afford to do without these things. Many of our well-to-do farmers as well as others are too niggard y in regard to the money they nvest in the education of their •hildrer. There is but one rule of strict morality that a man can adopt. That would be to live as pure and perfect a life as he would have his wife live, to avoid assoeif tions, habits and language that he would have her avoid. The old idea of one scale of ire.als for the man and another for the woman is very wrong, and until a young man is ostracised from society by the same act that would turn the young woman out in the cold world, social standing is a farce. The life blood of the-future"is the bounding pulse of our little ones. No son or daughter should be allowed to leave the shelter of home ignorant of those principles that underlie good government. Will the boy who is taught the sweet law of obedience for love’s sake, in the tender years of child hood, be likely to rebel when he is called upon to obey those 'aws that are made for the preserva tion of our country and good of the people? Will not the boy brought up to hold in respect all all that goes to make up a noble man and womanhood abide by these teachings when he step:- into the broader fi *lds that lie be fore him? will the girl brought up with such a brother give her future into the keeping of ; young man ho scoffs at religion, defies the law that makes all so dal life desirable, and lets his reason and judgement be led ot by every will o’-the wisp tha lurks at every morass and slough to lead weak men to destruction: Should we need to fear the futur if we do our whole duty ?
