In making love, as in making
book’s a great deal depends upon
the press work.
A negro doctor in Columbus
writes the fdlowing sensible lines to
the Valdosta Times: “A greal
deal bus been said about solving
the race problem. I think the easi
est amd quickest way to solve it is
tor the colored man to know his
place and stay in it and direct him
self to moral and indus'ril education
in order to make loyal and useful
citizens. The Southern white man
is the negro’s friend, and ia willing
;o help him when he deserves it
For instance, Mr. F. D. Peabody,
burn and raised in Columbus, Ga.,
has offered colored me" ot this city

that the white man south < f the Ma

Morals of the Child.
The moral development of the
child begins almost as soon asits men
tal, and the two march hand m hand.
The heme is the place where cor
reel moral principles should he Hist
instilled in the mind of the child,
and neglect of this may mean end
less suffering for parents and child.
Too often this is left to the servants
relatives, or the teacher latei. i be
parent who en n neglect this side of
the child’s development and trust it
to somebody else, is not worthy of
the responsibility that has been con
terred upon her. The neglect is not
altogether intentional but more oft
ett due to lack of energy and fore
thought. 'J’he work docs not begin
early enough, and the little mind
gets warped before the lessons arc
taught.-—M: rch Woman’s Home

A CHURCH LIGHTHOUSE.
Clinrlcston. S. c„ Hus the Only One
In Hie World.
The only church in the world so f.ni
ns is known that is also a lighthouse is
St. Philip's church, Charleston, S. C.
St. Philip's, which is one of the oldesl
churches in America, is known ns flu
“Westminster abbey of South Caroll
na,” because within and about its walls
so many distinguished men lie buried,
Including John C. Calhoun. The history
l * u ‘ °hl church is closely intonyoveii
" , ' Uh 4hut ot Sini ’ h Carolina, and many
of the , most celebrated events in the
history of the province are connected ” 1
-with it
If: is one of the sights of Charleston,
and strangers are always taken to sec
it and shown its graves and monu
ments.
The most remarkable feature of the
old church, however, is the fact,
its lofty steeple serves the purpose of
port of Charleston. The use of the stee
ple as a lighthouse dates hack to 1894,
when the United States lighthouse de
partment succeeded by dint of repeated
efforts in inducing the vestry of the
old church to allow a lantern to be
placed in the upper story of the steeple
to bo used as a range light for vessels
entering the harbor taro ugh the jetties
at its mouth.
The light used is very powerful and
Is placed at an altitude of about 125
feet above the ground, so that it Is
easily visible thirty miles at sea. Ships
making for Charleston harbor at night
always keep a sharp lookout for St.
l*hilip’s light and ns soon ns they sight
it get it into line with the beacon on
Fort Sumter and then make a straight
away run for the mouth of the jetties
and up through them into the harbor
of Charleston.

ed one of Hie handsomest architec
turally in the world and always at
tracts the eye of strangers entering
Charleston from the sea by its com
mauding height and artistic propor
tions.—St. Louis Republic.
