Corin'tCmiato &azrtit • r, f= i Wit. PARKER El.itob C. ..ORGAN MONROE, Aw>cia» Ewtob FEARSOX, GA., FEB. 5, 1881. PENCIL AND SCISSORS. A fire ocenred at West Point, Ga. this week, burning the Young Men’s Library Association rooms and eight stores. The losses are neatly all covered by insurance. Mr. J. D. lloyl, former editor of tiie Dawson Join Bat, has retired from t iie tripod of that paper, having disposed of all right and title which . he posoesed thereto. Wm. P. Brown, of City Point. Flor-; ida, drugged in New York Thursday night and robbed of nine hundred dol- 1 lars and his watch and chain. An drew McAlcer, a noted crimnal, was identified as the thief. 11 David Davis • rotes with the Democrat* the Democrats will organ ize the next Senate, and there is, no reason to doubt that the large Judge will vote with th« Democrat*. Sharon, of Nevada, was in his j seat in the Senate one day last week. | for the first time in a year: His i successor will doubtless do something to earn his salary. Sharon has never given an equivalent. The bill to place Grant on the retired list went over Monday under ; the objection of Senator Ve9t, who ! said as Grant bad left the army to become a politician, he must now take the politician's pot-luck. The sentence of death recently passe 1 upon Charles Powell, colored, for the murder of Sain Stathain in Telfair county, has been commuted by the Governor to imprisonment for life, Powell recently having been pronounced of unsound, mind. A correspondent writing from Washington says “The American habit of dancing comes from no passionate love of the amusement, but is persisted in because no great leaders ot ton have the genius to in vent anything better to do.” The papers say Sawyer, recently elected U. S. Senator from Wis consin, is the possessor of a colossal fortune. Only rich men can now get to the U. S. Senate from Nor thern States. Merit and ability have little to do in the selection of Smators. The telegraph consolidation is not likely to find such smooth sailing as ■was expected. Proceedings were begun last week in New York courts to prevent its consummation, and the State Assembly also adopted a res olution calling for an investigation of the matter. Bob lngersoll is always giving Democracy and God the devil. He goes to Australia this year to lecture against God, and next year he will be back pitching into what is left of the Democratic party. Hell and Democracy once disposed of, and Bob’s occupation will be gone. The whiDping-post seems to be getting popular again. New York and New Jersey law-makers seriously contemplate introducing the instru ment in those States for the benefit of wife-beaters. Delaware may yet have a chance to retort on her accusers. (Chris are a little ahead of boys. A Chicargo girl ot ten tried to commit suicide, and an Atlanta girl of ten would have married if anybody could have been found willing to per form the wedding ceremony. The Cincinnati boy who has committed forgery is eleven 3-ears old. An impression is gaining ground in Washington, according to a corres pondent, that the hostility agaiustthe Mormons w stimulated by a number of gentlemen in Utah, who are aware ot the vabable mineral deposits in districts ownod by the Mormons, and are seeking to drive them off, thus forcing their property on the market that it may be bought at a sacrifice. Mr. Murdock D. Wilcox, of Hawkinsville, was found dead in his bed on Friday morning last, thongh the night previous he was in usual health. Heart disease is the sup posed cause of his decease. He had been an active and prominent busi- Be-H inm in Hiw'siiHvilkj for about, fifteen years. The movement in Texas to rarye three States out of the immense teri tory covered by that name is favored by the people of the State. There is nothing to prevent this subdivision, as it is pemnited by the stipulations through which Teflas came into the Union, but with Republican control of Congress the Senator* elected by the three States will have a hard time getting their seats, of course. A reward of $ 150 for the arrest of tiie murderer of Carrie Stokes, the colored woman who, it will be re membered, was recently killed near Atlanta, and whose body the murder- er attempted to cremate, lias been of fered by Governor Colquitt. A ue<;ro named Lewis Glover has been arres ted on suspicion of having committed tiie crime. Mr. Orr, of Texas, petitions the Legislature, stating that he has no land ; that his wife, who weighs not more than 100 pounds, has had four sets of twins iu rapid succession ; that fiis family is increasing at such a rate that relief is necessary, etc. Mr. Orr should either buy hmself six dogs, or go and join the Shakers. A vote was taken in the United States Senate yesterday which indi cates clearly that the Democratic ma jority in the Upper House will op pose any measure looking to the hon or, glory, or emolument of ex-Presi dett Grant, The vote on considera tion of the bill to place his name on the retired list with the rank and pay of General of the Arin 3-, stood 28 to 25—three Democratic Senators vo ting witu the Republicans, The nsxt Congress will have the power, if I it have the disposition, to do for Gen. ! Grant what the present Congress 1 positively declines to do. Henry Jones, a white man, attempted to commit a brutal outrage upon a little 10 year old negro girl nearGiiffln, last Sunday. The cries of the girl attracted assistance, and the scoundrel fled. He was sub sequently arrested, but through the carelessness of his guards he made his escape and is still at large. The community is greatly incensed at the villain, and every effort is being made to again catch him. Ho is ■described as being about 23 or 24 years old, rather under the medium height and size, light hair, a thin, light moustache, blue eyes, and a face inclined to be peaked. A most extraordinary progress is apparently- about to be entered on respecting the utilization of cotton, the particulars of the process are briefly as follows. Instead of pick ing the cotton in the field, the stalks are pulled up by the roots and hauled to buildings. Clippers are used to cut off the limbs, and then cut off the bolls. The cotton is taken from the bolls by a hull separator, the stalk ani the limbs with the boils cut off are ready to go to the vat to be made ready to have the jute taken off; the bolls are realy to go to the paper mill; the seed cotton is ready to go to the Clement attachment mill. Cotton-picking with human finger s is dispensed with. The roots will probably give a good percentage of cotton manilla. The yield will, therefore, be cotton lint, oil cake, cot ton manilla, seed hulls (to add to lubricating compounds), and bolls j (to make brown paper.) GUANO! We call the attention of farmers to two new brands of Guano, The Tri umph Ground Bone and Dissolved Bone, Try some of this guano. We are sure you will be pleased with it. There are about three hundred Farmers that he says he cannot furnish with supplies to make their crops on. We can live on one hundred dol lars each until we can reach our crops, and still he does not seem able to foot the bill. The reason so many of us failed last year and the year before, was because they were not good crop years. The merchants can’t blame us if we don’t pay. Me has plenty of Clour, Corn, Bacon, Coffee, and other things which we need, and you can buy of him Cheap for Cash; hut he says to sell on time would take in too many customers, and he don’t wish to begin with them without he could go all around, and treat all alike.
