Come quick upon my lap,
And keep the flies off my bald head,

were 54,000,06*0; in 1879 there
50,500,000. Since the ffrsl of

January, Inarch, 5,066,000; February,
13,644,473; 7,356,713; April,
11,214,000; May, up to date, 2;700,000.
The total value of the timber received
so far this year amounts to about 8580 .*•
0(M; total value,of timber arrived since
January fat, 1877, about $2,634,000.
Although the river continues in fine
rafting condition there has not been
much timber down thus far this month.
This-we suppose is owing to the with¬
drawing of a large number of cutters
from the business for a time m older to
make their crops. This has been ex¬
pected all along and the sffhkpers have
not allowed themselves to be caught
“short.” Nevertheless vessels continue
to arrive and considerable qualities of
timber could still be sold at remunerative
prices to the cutter. There has been a
{ailing off from the prices that
ruled during the past four mouths but
this is owing, in a great measure, to the
quality tit flier timber. The,most of the
timber that has been sold daring the
past two weeks was of very poor quality,
and as a matter of course the price paid
for it is not a fair representation of the
market. Whenever a prime raft was
offered for sale the price paid' for it has
in nearly every instance been as high as
at any time duriug the season. For
ordinary timber we quote $2.00 hewn at 41. $2f.5l> ($■
to $1.30 and scab at from to
on the average.
A very fashionable lady, who fairly
dotes on her children, and is very par¬
ticular about their toilets, had a narrow
escape last Sunday from losing oue of
her darlings. It was leaning out of a
third story window, when it lost its bal¬
ance, and in a moment more it would
have been dashed to pieces on the crowd -
ed pavement below. Fortunately the
mother seizedik just as it was disappear¬
over the window sill. Clasping the
saved cherub to liter breathless breast,
the fond mother exclaimed, as tears of
flowed 1 from her uplifted eyes:
"If that ohilt^ had fallen i into the street
With that dirty dress dk, would never,
forgiven myself.” And she
proceeded,to dress it up in styles so that,
come what might, the family wohTd not
be disgraced. —
