SEARCHING FOR HIDDEN GOLD.
The Searchers Frightened Away by Hor
rible Noises After Finding the Chest.
A special dispatch from Wernersville,
Pa., says: The people in and around the
villages of Wernersville and Brownsville,
in Lower Heidelberg township, are agitated
over a story which has leaked out concern
ing a number of persons who are hunting for
a chest full of gold which is slid to be hid
den under a rock in a valley called Indian
Gap, on the South Mountain, not far from
Cushion Peak, near Wernersville. The
principal member of the searching party is ;
Lena Stertzbach, about 17 years of age,
whose parents live in the southeastern part
of North Heidelberg township, with several
men living near the mountain hamlet of
Wernersville. The young lady left her
parents’ home in the latter part of J une to
search for the gold which she claimed had
been revealed to her in a vision. It is
reported that one of the male members of
the party, at one time lived in a Western
State, and while there an Indian told him of
the hidden treasure, and that he could get
it if he had a certain person with him. .
They visited the place every night where
the treasure is alleged to be hidden. Christ
mas eve was the time when their treasure
should be discovered. The two visited the
place, accompanied by the father of the
girl, and they say they succeeded in getting
on the chest, when a horrible noise began,
and thev postponed the search to New i
Year’s Eve. Whether they succeeded in
getting it is unknown. The entire party
seem to be infatuated with the idea ot sud- -
denly becoming rich, and it is said that |
incantations and many strange antics are
performed at midnight to get the spirits to
where the gold is hidden.

If J. S. Clarkson, of lowa, has any proof
to support his charge that Mr. St. John
offered to sell out his candidacy to the Re
publican National Committee during the
recent canvass, it is high time that he
brought it out. The accused candidate has
given Mr. Clarkson and all other persons full
permission to publish any of his letters and
to reveal any conversations they may know
which can support their serious charge. It
is quite evident that Mr. Clarkson, in his
rage and disappintment, has said things
which he has not the proof to fully sup
port.
