The attempt to furnish penny dinners in
London has been a failure. They were good
in quality and quantity but the people
would not patronize them.
Although the King of Bavaria’s lavish
expenditure in building has crippled him of
late, he has a splendid income. It is com
puted to be nearly $2,500 a day.
55 A beekeeper of .Riverside, Cal., has 33
hives of bees, which have yielded during
the last season 7| tons of honey, an average
of 414 pounds to the hive.
Prince Roland Bonaparte has a novel
idea. He proposes to have a collection of
the diflerent uncivilized races in Paris.
We constantly, he argues, bring together
the various products of the globe; why not
bring together the producers?
Not a mile of railroad track, not a bank,
not a telegraph office is erected in Calhoun
county, Illinois, though it has a population
of about 8,000- The typical resident is
said to be part hunter and part farmer,
with a decided leaning to leisure.
Miss Edith, daughter of Minister Foster,
was a favorite with the royal family at
Madrid, and boasts the possession in her
album of the autographs of the King and
Queen, the ex-Queen Isabella and a whole

A girl in Knoxville was struck in the face
by her father. The blow w-as light, but it
was the first she had ever received from
him, and, worse still, her sweetheart was
present. She fell ill that same day, sank
steadily during a year, and is now dead.
Ex-Senator Sharon’s estate, in which
Sarah Hill —by the decision of the court,
“Mrs. Sharon”—will share, is put down at
$4,000,000. Ex-Judge George W. Tyler,
Miss Hill’s counsel, took the case for one
half of what might be recovered. Tyler is
said to have grown rich taking divorce
cases on these terms.
There continues to be an immense immi
gration of Italian peasants to this country
in spite of the fact that many of those who
have come here fared badly! From one
prefect alone there issued this year 6,000
passports for emigrants to America. The
Italian papers are bewailing the extent and
immensity of the movement.
Lady Borthwick, wife of the editor and
proprietor of the London Morning Post, is
now one of the half dozen great political
party givers in London. Her husband is a
Tory, but she comes of Whig stock, being a
niece of the late Earl of Clarendon. The
Post is worth far less than the other morn
ing dailies, but probably yields its owner
over $40,000 a year.
A young Englishman has insured his
whole body against accident except his left
leg, which no company will now insure, as
he is subject to sudden weakness in this
limb, and it has been the cause of much loss
to companies, if he has a fall through this
faulty member he will be unable to recover
any amount from the companies in whose
office his body is ins ired.
