AMEKJCAN HUMOR.
Supp'ltd by Our Exchanges.
The artist made an error in the orchestra,
and the Harp hissed to the Guitar: “You
are no better than a sharp.”- With a thumb
like complacency the latter reparteed: “And
you are a half-brother to a lyre.” But there
was uo duel. —Hatchet.
Richard Grant White, they tell us, is
convalescing. We don’t know what has been
ailing Mr. White, but presume he slipped
on one of his highly polished sentences and
stabbed himself with one of his stiff rhetori
cal rules.—Chicago News.
A Maine jury has fixed the expense of
kicking a person out of a store or other place
of business at s2l. We are glad we don’t
live in Maine. The expenses of running
our office would bankrupt us in lees than two
months. —Burlington Free Press.
A Tooth and Nail Affair—The Buzz saw
and the hand of the victim. Motto for a
Guillotinist—“Be sure you’re right, then go
ahead.” London Assurance Accusing
Americans of blowing up old Thames bridg
es.—Puck.
A Philadelphia editor says that “a ten
cent saloon drink of whiskey costs but one
sixth of a cent at the distillery.” Hie editor
is very fortunate in being allowed to buy his
refreshments direct from the distillery
Courier-Journal.
A man was arrested in St. Petersburg the
other day with several revolvers and a
quantity of dynamite in his possession.
Upon what errand of mischief this walking
arsenal was bant is not stated, but, most
wonderful of all, it is not asserted that he
came from America. —Philadelphia Call.
It is announced that 500 Canadians on
snow shoes will call on President-elect
Cleveland next mouth. The only comfort
Grover can get out of this alarming pros
pect is that if the Canadians keep their
snow shoes on they won’t be able to get near
enough to him to shake hands.—Lowell
Citizen.
California is not behind other States in
producing monstrosities. A chi'd with a
wooden leg was born at Sacramento the
other day, and the inhuman father stormed
around because there were was no hand
organ and monkey with the outfit. How
ever, the child can draw a pension, which is
not so slow in these pinching times. —Pret-
zel’s Weekly.
“Prisoner,” said Prosecutor Buxton, “you
are charged with gambling.” “Gambling?
What is gambling?” “Playing cards for
money.” “But I did not play cards for
money; I played cards for chips.” “Well,
you got money for your chips at the end of
the game, didn’t you?” “No; I didn’t have
any chips at the end of the game.” The
testimony being all in, Buxton moved, and
Judge Hutchins agreed, that the case be
nolled.—Cleveland Herald.
On an Arkansas railway train. A passen
ger calls the conductor and saj s: ‘Seems to
take some time.” “Yes; they are rather
slow to-night.” “Why don’t you burn coal
so you wouldn’t have to stop and wood up?”
“We do burn coal.’ “Then what are you
stopping here for?” “O, I didn’t unde stand
you when you said it took ’em some time.
We are waiting for the train robbers to
blow open the express safe. Don’t be in a
hurry, they’ll be through pretty soon. Ah,
here they come now. Better hold up your
hands, I reckon.”—Arkansaw Traveler
A Poser for the Judge.
A Texas Judge, who is the perfection of
dignity on the bench, swore in as a witness
a rather frivolous looking young female.
“What is your name?” esked the Judge.
“Dolly Dimple.”
“Where do you reside?” The witness
giggled and replied :
“What’s the use of me telling you where
I live? You wouldn’t call on me anyhow,
would you, Judge?”

I When you come to think of it, it is not
odd that literary j>epple prefer a pipe to a
cigar. It is handier to smoke when they
are writing, and ever so much cleaner.
And then it gives them the true essence
and flavor of the tobacco.
The most fastidious smokers among all
nations and all classes of men agree that
the tobacco grown on the Golden Tobacco
Belt of North Carolina is the most delic
ious and refined in the world. Lighter
than Turkish, more fragrant than Havana,
freer from nitrates and nicotine than any
other, it is just what the connoisseur
praises and the habitual smoker demands.
