Os More Or Less lutcrest.
There is the authority of the editor of
the San Francisco Christian Advocate for
the charge that no pure California wine is
put on the market. He believes that adul
teration is the invariable mle. Some of
the vineyard men retort that he is a reck
less falsifier.
More suicides occur in San Francisco in
proportion to its population, says the Alta
California, than in any other city on the
contimnt. The number of suicides in that
city for the year ending with June last was
over two and a half times as many as oc
curred in New York in 1880.
An English magistrate recently had a lad
before him whom he declared “an extraor
dinary boy.” When his father secreted the
lad's trousers so that he couldn’t go out
nights, the youth stole a pair of the old
man’s, cut pieces oft’ the legs and sallied
forth. Very extraordinary boy that!
The London World well says it is a mel
ancholy commentary on English rule in
Ireland that it now takes more a.med men
to protect the vice-regal lodge in Phenix
Park every day of the week than it did to
hold the fort and the city of Dublin when
the English first took it under Milo de ,
Cogan. _ '
Official returns show a remarkable in 1
crease of suicide in France. Five years ago
the number pet 100,000 inhabitants was 17;
it is now 19. Hanging and drowning are
most popular, and next in favor are fire
’arms and charcoal fumes. April, May and
June are the favorite months of the Parisian
suicide.
The Masonic Cemetery Association of
San Francisco has brought suit against ex-
Senator Sharon and others for desecrating a
grave during the Sharon divorce trial.
This was on account of Miss Hill
placing some of Sharon’s undergarments in
a. newly made grave for the purpose of act
ing as a love charm on the millionaire.
The story is being published of General
Sheridan that, because he declared that
only in one certain restaurant in America
could roast chicken be obtained in perfec
tion, some waggish friends had a bogus fowl
constructed of veal and pork and served to
liim in the same establishment. He spoke
in high praise of the counterfeit while eat
ing it.
A wealthy French chef left a provision
in his will that various tried recipes should
be put upon his tombstone, in order that
’“people visiting the cemetery might gain at
least a little information.” But the ceme
tery officials will not allow the provision to
be cairied out, and the executors have
therefore brought a suit, the outcome of
which is awaited with interest.
Reports submitted at the meeting of the
Colorado Cattle Growers’ Association in
Denver show that 60 000 beef cattle were
shipped from the State in 1884. and that
40,000 were killed for home consumption.
These are the first accurate statistics ever
compiled of the Colorado cattle trade, and
the figures prove to be lower than has gen
-erally l»een estimated.

Durham is historic. It was neutral ground
during the armistice between Sherman and
Johnson. Soldiers of both armies filled
their pouches with the tobacco stored there,
and, after the surrender, marched home
ward. Soon orders came from East, West,
* North and South, for “more of that elegant
tobacco.” Then, ten men ran an unknown
factory. Now it employs 800 men, uses the
pink and pick of the Golden Belt, and the
Durham Bull is the trade-mark of this, the
best tobacco in the world. Blackwell’s Bull
Durham Smoking Tobacco has the largest
sale of any smoking tobacco in the world.
Why! Simply because it is the lut. All
dealers have it Trade-mark of the Bull.

“Only an Ahrtad,
Don’t Believe IL”
[ One hall the public never read an adver
tisement, and those who do don’t believe
half that advertisers say. No wonder, either,
for gross exaggeration and misrepresenta
tion Is now the rule, and square matter of
fact statements are seldom seen In modern ad-
1 vertisements. This Is unfortunate for legiti
mate advertisers. Thus, when we advertised
the purchase of 850,000 worth of CHICKER
ING PIANOS, In October last.lt was said to
be “Only an Advertisement,” and hence not
true. But all the same IT WAS TRUE. We
find, that in advertising the square truth
answers our purpose best of all, and when we
make a statement we mean It to be a true
one. To those who do not know the magni
tude of our trade or the Immense popularity
of the CHICKERING PIANOS, it may seem
improbable that we should buy 850,000 worth
at one purchase, but, “facts are stubborn
things,” and in this case they are all on our
side. We can’t show the Pianos, for eager
buyers have appropriated fully one-third of
them, but we can show the contract with
CHICKERING & SONS, and the Invoices,
which certainly Is evidence indisputable. Os
course, all these Pianos did not come to Sa
vannah. We are Southern Wholesale Agents
for the CHICKERING PIANOS with exclu
sive control of Five States and our Eleven
Branch Houses and countless Agencies took
a large number of these Pianos.
Large shipments have been made to Savan
nah, and we expect to sell about FIFTY
direct from our warerooms. Many of our
leading citizens have taken advantage of this
Special Sale, and given us the pleasure of
placing these magnificent. Instruments In
their homes. We have now In our ware"
rooms a full line of SQUARES, SQUARE
GRANDS, UPRIGHT AND CONCERT
I GRANDS, which we offer at Factory prices
for Cash, or on our easy Installment Terms.
The UPRIGHTS with the new metallic
action, seem to [be preferred bynearly all
purchasers, and they are certainly the finest
and most perfect Instruments that it is pos
sible to construct. We ask Pianists and Con
nolseures to call and inspect these Superb In-
1 struments.
