PERSONS AND THINGS.
Passable tenors are worth S3OO to S7OO a
year in Brooklyn churches.
“The Hopping Disciples of the Devil” is
the name of a dancing club in Texas.
In one of the Indian languages the word
“woman” is rendered “kew-kew jaw-jaw.”
With the beginning of the year Boston
began five cent fares on all her street rail
ways.
The Utah papers are boasting about the
hog which that Territory has sent to the
New Orleans Exposition. It weighs 1,076
pounds.
Myron W. Whitney, the well known
basso, has a beautiful home near Boston, and
will retire from the operatic stage after this
winter.
London Bridge is a tramps’ lodging house.
A seat in one of its recesses is as much
sought after as a stall in the theatre on a
first night.
Things were made rather lively in the
San Francisco Post Office a week or so hgo
bv the escape of a number of bees from a
package received by mail.
List year Massachusetts enjoyed almost a
total immunity from small pox, but nine
cases, with one death, having been known
to occur, which is less than for any year since
1844.
The name of Arizona, the Sentinel of
that Territory says, was not bestowed
through any poetic arrangements of Indian
or Spanish names, but is derived from
aridus, dry, and zona, a girdle or belt.
It is proposed to hold a meeting in Port
land, Maine, on Longfellow’s birthday,
February 7, to unveil the bust of the poet,
which is coming from England to the Maine
Historical Society.
A bounty of $1 per head for each wolf
destroyed in Northwest Canada is now being
paid by ranchmen in that section, who have
suffered considerable loss lately by the rav
ages of those animals.
A white whale killed in the Mediterra
nean, near St. Tropez, has just been brought
to the Museum of the Jardin des Plantes.
Paris. It was sixteen feet long, and was
cut in pieces and preserved in spirits.
FASHION NOTES.
A prettier dress for a young girl in her
fresh beauty could not be than a simple
tulle made over a taffeta silk skirt. Most
fairy like are some of those in white worn
with a soft surah sash in becoming color.
A very pretty Watteau dress of light
coffee-colored camel’s hair cloth had a lin
ing of shell-pink surah silk. The whole
was edred with wide angora lace. Some of
the Watteau dresses have a monk’s hood,
•lined with silk.
There are pretty poke bonnets for skaters
made of brown or red velvet, with fur of
becoming color facing the brim, which mav
be pinched into a point or else turned back
like revers, and a three-cornered opening be
left at the top.
Powder and patches are much worn at the
theatres this season, and the ladies look as
much like “la belle marquise” of tradition
as possible. For the sake of their maids not
to say for tbeir own, one can but hope that
the powder is applied to a wig.
A garment for real warmth should be
wadded with wool in preference to cotton
A woolen lining will also be found warmer
than one of silk or cotton. Eider-down
garments are both light and warm, but not
very healthful, and make one very sensitive
to cold when once worn.
At evening parties and dances high and
square bodices are more seen than low ones,
and the long gloves may be attached to the
short elbcw sleeves bv lace of any color to
match the dress. This has a good effect, but
must not be too tightly strained, to admit of
moving the arm freely.
For the front of an evening dress the
ground is letaon colored sa*>n. The hem is
fringed with artificial shaded g -isses. Above
this is a wide embroidereo bor ler of black
berries, showing flowers at d frat; entwined
with these are bunches ol hot e chestnut
leaves and nuts.
Ladies who consider paints an' powders
objectionable, but wishing to mpr .'ve their
complexion by other means i, variibly uee
the cosmetic masks. This is the way to use
them: First wash the face clean, rub all over
with cream, put on a mask and wear it for
at least an hour. Upon removal, wipe the
face with a soft cloth and use the powder
lightly.
