unfortunate in their selection of the objects
of their wrath.
A Snorter.
Chicago Herald.
President Arthur announces four formal
receptions at the White House during the
next six weeks. The one for Democrats
will take place on March 4 and it will be a
“snorter.”
Democratic Opposition to the Treaties.
N. Y. Sun.
The decisive objection to the reciprocity
treaties, from a Democratic point of view, is
that they would seriously alter our fiscal sit
uation at a time when an incoming admin
istration, representing a party long debarred
from office, is about to bear the weighty re
sponsibilities of government, and should,
therefore, be left free to deal as best it can
with fiscal as well as political problems.
No Such Precedent Ought to be Estab
lished.
There is no citizen of the United States
who does not cherish a feeling of admiration
and gratitude for the military services of
General Grant and a sympathy for the
disasters which have been brought npon
him. In view of these disasters an effort
is making to obtain a pension for him from
Congress, or an act restoring him to the
army as a retired officer but with full pay.
This effort ought not to succeed. There is
no reason for granting a pension from the
National Treasury, nor should any man who
has resigned from the army to become
President be restored to it afterward. No
such precedent ought to be established; yet
the public sympathy should be manifested
toward General Grant in an effective man
ner, proceeding from the masses of the peo
ple. We propose a great popular subscrip
tion, the amount given by each subscriber
to be limited.
Strange World This.
And some funny people in it, too. You
have all come in contact with some that
are never satisfied. They grumble from
morning until night—we heard a man
even grumble in bed. That man would
grumble at any thing and every thing,
without reason; but this week we heard
a gentleman grumble with good reason.
He bought a suit of clothes and paid a
good old fashioned price for it, and, hap
pening to confe into the “ Famous,” fie
was shown a suit of the same class of
goods, and our price was $8 less than he
had paid. That gentleman had stood rea
son to find fault, and grumbled at his
bad luck; but it will be a good lesson to
him, and he will buy of the “Famous”
next time. We are through taking stock,
and now comes our annual clearing sale.
We will sell you anything in our line at
manufacturers’ cost. Our prize system
has worked charmingly, and we made
dozens of people happy by giving them
prizes. We will keep it up. Call, and
■we will not only give you better goods,
cheaper than you can buy any where, but
give a prize to every twentieth purchaser
in the bargain. “Famous,” 140 Congress
street.

The Emperor Louis Napoleon smoked
only the finest cigars the world could pro
duce. Prof. Horsford says the Emj>eror s
cigars were made specially for him in Ha
vana from leaf tobacco grown in the Golden
Belt of North Carolina, this being the finest
leaf grown. Blackwell’s Bull Durham
Smoking Tobacco is made from the same
leaf used in the Emperor’s cigars, is abso
lutely pure and is unquestionably the best
tobacco ever offered.
Thackeray’s gifted daughter, Anne, in
her sketch of Alfred Tennyson, in Harper'a
Monthly, tells of her visit to the great poet.
She found him smoking Blackwell’s Bull
Durham Tobacco, sent him by Hon. James
Russell Lowell, American Minister to the
Court of St. James.
In these days of adulteration, it is a com
fort to smokers to know that the Bull Dur
ham brand is absolutely pure, and made
from the best tobacco the world produces.
Blackwell’s Bull Durham Smoking To

“Only an Advertisement,
Don’t Believe It.”
One halt the public never read an adver
tisement, and those who do don’t believe
half that advert isers say. N o wonder, elt her,
for gross exaggeration and misrepresenta
tion is now the rule, and square matter ol
fact statements are seldom seen in modern ad;
vertisements. This is unfortunate for legiti
mate advertisers. Thus, when we advertised
the purchase of 850,000 worth of CHICKER
ING PIANOS, in October last, it was said to
be “Only an Advertisement,” and hence not
true. But all the same IT WAS TRUE. We
find, that in advertising the square truth
answers our purpose best of all, and when we
make a statement we mean it to be a true
one. To those who do not know the magni
tude of our trade or the immense popularity
of the CHICKERING PIANOS, it may seem
improbable that we should buy 850,000 worth
at one purchase, but, “facts are stubborn
things,” and in tills case they are all on oui
side. We can’t show the Pianos, for eager
buyers have appropriated fully one-third oi
them, but we can show the contract with
CHICKERING & SONS, and the invoices,
which certainly is evidence Indisputable. Os
course, all these Pianos did not come to Sa
vannah. We are Southern Wholesale Agents
for the CHICKERING PIANOS with exclu
sive control of Five States and our Eleven
Branch Houses and countless Agencies took
a large number of these Pianos.
Large shipments have been made to Savan
nah, and we expect to sell about FIFTY
direct from our warerooms. Many of our
leading citizens have taken advantage of this
Special Sale, and given us the pleasure of
placing these magnificent Instruments in
their homes. We have now in our ware
rooms a full line of SQUARES, SQUARE
GRANDS, UPRIGHT AND CONCERT
GRANDS, which we offer at Factory prices
for Cash, or on our easy Installment Terms.
Tlie UPRIGHTS with the new metallic
action, seem to [be preferred bynearly all
purchasers, and they are certainly the finest
and most perfect Instruments that it is pos
sible to construct. We ask Pianists and Con
nolseures to call and inspect these Superb In
