SOCIAL SESSION
A BIG SUCCESS,
ELKS’ ENTERTAINMENT LAST
NIGHT WAS GREATLY EN<
JOYED BY ALL.
Prominent Citizens of Brunswick in
Attendance and Delivered Ad
dresses on Elkdom.
Last night the B. P. O. E., which,
appropriately expressed, means the
Best People on Earth, or more prop
erly speaking, the Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks, and not, as
the Cincinnati Enquirer termed them
when they were holding a national
convention in Cincinnati some years
ago, Bully People on Exhibition—
held a social session in their commo
dious hall over the National Bank,
and a brilliant affair it was in every
sense of the word. In fact, it was
one "of the most enjoyabe occasions
ever given by the Brunswick Lodge
of Elks, and Chauncey Depew, as an
after-dinner speaker, wouldn’t have
been “in it” with the speakers at ue
Elks' social session last night.
Elaborate preparations had been
made for the occasion. At an early
hour the Elks and their guests began
to arrive, and by 8 o’clock the spa
cious hall was filled to its capacity.
| The Elks were at their best, and
Ia fine looking body of men they were.
| Among the guests were many of the
most prominent citizens of Bruns
wick.
District Deputy W. W. Starr, of the
State of Georgia, was master of cere
monies. and right royally did he enter
tain all present.
The feature of the evening was the
address of Colonel W. E. Kay, which
was a most brilliant oration, inter
spersed with interesting anecdotes,
which was well received by the au
dience. Colonel Kay was presented
with a beautiful bronze figure by the
local lodge of Elks as a souvenir of
the occasion.
A number of other addresses wore
made, among the speakers being Mr.
F. Dt Aiken. Professor Ballard, Dr. U.
W, Blanton and others.
The Opera House orchestra dis
coursed music during the evening, and
a male quartette Was one of the feat
ures of the musical program.
At the conclusion of the speech
making a sumptuous feast, consisting
of ail the good things to eat imagina
ble. was served, and to say that full
justice was done to it would he put
ting it mild.
A delegation of Elks were present
from Savannah, among whom were
F. X. Douglas, Charles Saussy, George
Schwartz, John J. Kirby and Mr.
Smitn. ,
The local committee, to whose ef
forts the success of the entertainment
is due, was composed of B. P. Cole
man, chairman; L. H. Haym, and
Charles C. Fleming.
Next month a ladies’ evening will
he held, and promises to be quite a
notable event.
Tho local lodge of the Best People
on Earth is steadily increasing in
membership, and bids fair to become
a leading organization in Elkdom.
Here’s to the Elks, and may their
organization grow and prosper with
unbounded success.

Notice to Tax Payers.
The time for the payment of state
and county taxes for the year 1901
expired on December 19 last past,
and according to law all taxes remain
ing unpaid on that date must J>e
placed in execution. I notice in the-
Atlanta Journal of Saturday last,
where nearly 100 counties had made
settlement. Now, in order that Glynn
county may not be among the last to
make settlement, and also, to assist
those who have not yet paid, I will
accept the tax due by them for 1901,
up to and including Saturday, the 25th
day of January, 1902, without demand
ing the cost to which I am entitled
under the law. H. J. READ,

Whereas, It further appearing that
the majority of the pupils of the said
