PUBLISHERS NOTICE.
The News Publishing Company de
sires it to be distinctly understood that
all legal advertisements must be paid

devote our space to such advertise
ments and wait on the courts for the
money.
The prince Is here.
The Tillman-McLaurin difficulty in
tne senate was a digrace to the Amer
icans.
Some of the gubernatorial candi
dates had hotter visit Brunswick if
they want our people to know they
are running:
Probably Admiral Schley ,s not
very much Impressed with tec old
adage that “nothing succeeds like
success.” It has not been true in his
case.
Terrell Is “working” south Georgia,
while Col. Estill is “veutlgatlng” in
the northern section of the state.
Guerry is moving and talking in all
sections.
"Give us ships,” cries President
Schwab, wiio has just returned from
his trip to Europe, “and America will
take care of the world s markets.'
The Philadelphia Record replies to
this by saying: "Give us cheap steel,
Mr. Schwab, and our shipyards will
turn out the necessary fleets to mer
chantmen.” The Record thinks the
president of the steel trust, ought to
he shamed to beg for ship subsidies
while boasting that he can undersell
European producers or steel in their
own markets.
WHY THE FIGHT CONTINUES.
The British government persistent
ly keeps up the war in South Africa,
says the Columbus Enquirer-Sun re
gardless of the enormous cost of it
and the groat loss of life. This fact
causes inquiring minds to consider
why It does It. What docs the gov
eminent hope to gain? What does it
consider at stake? Surely it does not
believe that the Transvaal, with the
Orange Free State thrown in. are
wostji intrinsically the groat cost of
life and money which it is called upon
to pay. The stake must he larger.
The lsmdon Daily Chronicle, a liber
al paper, thus puts its estimate of the
ißstte:
“This war in South Africa is a war
for the very existence of the British
empire. It is a struggle for tne ideas
and institutions which it is the pride
and privilege of that empire to make
prevail. It is, in another aspect of it,
a war against war. It was provoked
and rendered necessary by the intro
duction of militarism Into a great
country which would otuorwise have
worked out its destinies by the play
of natural forces expressing them
selves tnrough the ballot box.”
In other words, if this he a true
statement or the situation, the Hr it
i'Tt go\ emn ent regards this war ns
a case of self preservation. If they
lose, all they have fought for in the
past will b tost. ’Phis seems to lie a
matter if one may judge by the
very correct represetation of the
actual unanimity and hull-dog obsti
nacy with which the great majority
of the English and Scotch of Great
Btitcln and its colonies prosecute the
hostilities.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
AT OUR PLAY HOUSE.
The announced coming of Mr. Mc-
Lean and Miss Tyler to the Grand on
Tuesday, February 25, is of peculiar
interest to the theater-going public of
tills city.
The engagement is considered one
of the most important ever secured
for the local play house, and the
great stars will undoubtedly he greet
ed by one of the largest audiences
that ever assembled in the house.
Both Mr. McLean and Miss Tyler have
long been reeeognised as among the
leading lights in the theatrical profes
sion, and this season they have under
taken a revival of the legitimate
drama on an elaborate scale. That
they have met with unbounded success
is attested by the splendid houses that
have greeted them in every city in
which they have so far appeared, and
by the enthusiastic criticisms from
press and public everywhere.
The play is elaborately produced,
being magni ticierifly staged, correctly
costumed and Interpreted by a cast
of all stars, headed by Mr. McLean
and Miss Tyler.
“The Burgomaster.”
“The Burgomaster, ’ one of the best
cheering comedies of recent years, is
announced for at the Grand on March
4, on which occasion we may expe< t to
see a more costly and much larger pro
dilution than last season. The scen
ery and costumes arc all new and
more elaborate, ami the company more
eminent and much stronger, inasmuch
as two distinct organizations was pre
senting this merry melange last seas
on, and as but one aggregation is en
tour this season the management have
formed this season’s cast from the
pick of the Uvo companies and com
prises Herbert Cawtliorn, Eugene
Hand ford, Hairy do Lortne, George
Broderick, Edith Yerrlngton, Ida Haw
ley, Earnest Salvator, Will Peters.
Joe Nicol, Andy Lynan, A. J. Murray,
Madeline Wlnthrop, Sadie Stockton,
and many others of equal prominence,
naturally including that merry girley
chorus of forty youthful, graceful and
beautiful fascinators.
