The returns from the Arkansas pri
mary eli tlion held last Saturday show
that Senator Jas K. Jones was le
feated and that er-Governor t-~*i p.
Clarks was nominated by the .iemo
crats to succeed him.
Senator Jones has beeii in the Unit
ed States senate for a long time,
but his record in that body has not
been suc’n as to give him much prom
inence. His most prominent service,
perhaps, was as chairman of the na
tional democratic committee during
the campaigns of 1896 and 1900, but
in neither of these did he show con
spicuous ability except as a most
sanguine hoper. In fact his efforts
during each campaign were more or
less amusing, and democrats general
ly never regarded him seriously. His
defeat in the present campaign was
doubtless due as much to his connec
tion with I’ne Round Cotton Bale com
pany as to anything else. In view of
the democratic position on trusts ami
monopolies, Ids, opponent, who did
not fail to characterize the round bale
company as a monopoly, urged it
against him with telling effect, and
he was defeated.
Mr. Clark is a man of superior
ability, and in Idm Arkansas will
have a strong representative.

gerrymander. To gerrymander has
become a verb in common use in po

to reduce the representation of the
