The Excelsior Literary society held
an unusually interesting meeting on
Friday and the following new officers
were elected: President, James Os
borne: secretary, Clare O'Couor; vice
president. McDonald Harley, and !i
--liraian, Leila Bunkley. A contest In
elocution among the g.ris was much
enjoyed. Those who recited were
Leah Johnson. Alice Martin, Rebecca
Davis. Lucy HoTtzendorff, Leila Bunk
ley. Mary Ellenwood, Maggie Davis,
Lily Gornto, Clare O'Connor, Nellie
Kenner, Emma Cornell, and Martha
Olsen. The judges were Mrs. R. R.
Hopkins, Mrs. 0. \Y. Blanton and
Miss Mamie Waff. Their decision will
be rendered on Monday.
On Friday night, at the higu school,
an entertainment will be given by
the teachers to the children, patrons
and friends of the school. Mr. A. V.
Wood having allowed the use of his
magic lantern for the occasion. The
entertainment wii! be a trip through
the United States, and is to illustrate
the geography and nature work be
ing done in the schools. Pictures oi
ail the places of interest, both nat
ural and political, will be shown, the
idea being to give object lessons In
these studies and familiarize the
children with the appearance, places
and objects which afe simply ab
stract conceptions to them now. Ob
ject lessons accomplish more In one
evening in studies of this kind than
months of mere textbook, phraseology
and memory work, and the teachers
will endeavor to have a series of
these entertainments in the future in,
order to illustrate by actual repre-
sentation, the various oejects studied
about. Some very amusing scenes
will also be shown, and the entertain
ment promises to he productive of
much enjoyment as well as benefit!
The pictures wfll be described by Mr.
Ballard, whose knowledge of the
subject under discussion is deep and
thorough. The public is invited to
