is devoting herself to the industrial
improvement of her people generally.
Toe Atlanta Constitution is urging

Tampa is raising a bowl because
the postmaster of that city has re

to them to say that this department

a satisfactory one.

SECRET SERVICE FOLLY.
The Charleston News and Courier
makes some caustic comments upon
a certain feature of the president’s
visit to Charleston and its conclu
sions are doubtless shared by most
people, especially in the south.
The News and Courier says:
In his account of the president’s
visit to Charleston, the correspondent
of the Washington Star said: “There
are more secret service men and
Washington detectives here than I
ever saw following a president Three
times as many as ever went anywhere
with McKinley.” And he might have
added that they did not earn their
salt.
With the exception of the two de
tectives sent to Charleston by Major
Sylvester, of the Washington police
force, and two of the sercret service
men, who kept In the background,
dressed like gentlemen ana who sat
at the president’s dinner in full dress,
the rest of the gang were generally
a nuisance. They were always con
spicuously in evidence; always in
the way;. always posing, so tlmt they
cob Id not have detected anything if
there had ‘Yrecn anything to detect;
and auSutnmerville they spent at least
a part of the night in liberal libations
and made no provision for the safe
guarding of the president. On the
other hand, Sylvester’s me® were al
ways around without, being offensive
ly obtrusive and without wearing file
secret service look of important which
said to any person who might have
been on mischief bent, ‘,’We are detec
tives. and we’ll catch you if you don’t
look out.”
it was right and proper, of course,
to tfuard the president so that he
should not bo rmnoyed oy the crowd —
there was never any danger that n.ny
one would attempt to da him Injur**;
hut the secret service men sent here
were not competent for this dut.v.
Contain Henry Leonard and his Ma
rine corps were worth a thousand of
the other sort; and really did most
efficient service. They were oilier and
always alert, and were praised by the
president for their admirable conduct.
It is hoped that in such further ov
l*edltions as he may make through the
country from time to time—and we
trust, that lie will eome this way again
—the president will insist on picking
his protectors, so that the secret ser
vice'farce played here last week shall
nut he repeated anywhere else.
A street railway company in New

ages $9,000 for tiie loss of a leg, and
nt the same time another street rail
way company in New York has been
assessed $15,000 for the loss of an
ttrmv, while a verdict of sio,ooo has
been returned in Brooklyn for the
death °f a man. Whatever may be
said of this from a legal aspect, it is
rather confusing physiologically.
