January 1, 1903.
That, man who telegraphed the
doctor: “My mother-in-law Is at
heath's door, please come at once
and see if you can pull her through,’’
meant well, at all events.
The river and harbor bill seems to
be in danger in the senate. Since
Brunswick is deeply interested in the
passage of this bill it Is to be 'coped
that It will not be side-tracked.
Senator Gonzales de Quesada la
mentioned as Cuba’s first diplomatic
representative at Washington. He
was a prominent member of the Cu
ban junta and of the Cuban constitu
tional convention.
The movement looking to the erec
tion of a monument to General Ogle
thorpe at Frederica, should be warmly
supported by the people of Brunswick,
Frederica Is in our county and our
people should rally to the cause.
The latest thing In the way of a
trust Is the proposed bootblack’s union
of Montgomery. They propose to
‘ raise prices, ala beef trust, and 'nave
adopted the motto: "A dime or no
siTHm.” This is certainly a “shining”
cxUnrphy of what we are coming to.
William W. Thomas, Jr., United

Congressman Grosvenor says the
tariff needs revision, “not now—later
•ou." By thftt. possibly he means the
trusts are not ready for any change.
The American citizen, however, will
so'ine day realize how he is being used
as a means of enrichment for the few,
and revolt at the confines. Then will
the tariff be revised and for the benefit
of the masses.
The American Lumberman for April
contains a very gratifying statement
of Brunswick's lumber shipments. The
Lumberman is one of the largest pub
lications tn tno country, is printed
In Chicago, and i an authority on
the shipping industry generally. The
record made by Brunswick, as estab
lished In the Lumberman Is a source
of gratification (o our people goner

The Home Tribune very sensibly
says: Mr. Ouerry .as challenged Mr,
Terndl to meet him in Joint debate in
Atlanta. Mr. Terrells reply to the
challenge nas not been received, hut
it is thought that he will not accept.
There is no necessity tor a Joint de
bate between democratic candidates.
Such debates serve only to stir up'
strife within the ranks of the party
and this should always be avoided
if possible.
AN OGLETHORPE MEMORIAL.
The Atlanta Constitution of yester
day, has the following editorial no
tice, which will be of Interest to the
people of Brunswick generally:
“The patriotic women of ueorgia
through their organized societies, art
doing much to write and preserve the
history of the early days of the colony.
Mrs. Robert E. Park, state regent of
the Daughters of the. American Revo
lution. calls attention eloquently to
one phase of their preservative work
that ought to command prompt and
sufficient assistance from all true lov
ers of the state.
The historic water battery erect
ed by General Oglethorpe at Fort
Frederika, on St. Simon Island, is rap
idly going to decay and may be soon
swallowed up by the ocean tides un
less rescued and properly preserved.
It will not cost a groat deal to restore
that old work, which was the <■■*>> of
the* lhial victory by which England
saved her southern colonies from the
invasion of the Spaniards.. Its import
ance in the ear./ history of this col
ony cannot be ignored, and it, would
be an unpatriotic shame to let it dis
appear from our coast scenery for
ever.
When properly restoicd it will make
the most eligible and appropriate site
for a monument to Oglethorpe. Seen
a memorial has been projected and
some liberal contributions have al
ready been tendered for the prosecu
tion of the project, It is high time
that active steps were taken to re
alize so patriotic und valuable a his
toric project
St. Simon island is one of the love
liest and most Interesting of those
that lino our coast and its colonial
history was most fascinating. It
should by no means be permitted to
pass entirely into private possession
—into the ownership of persons from
the north- and retain no spot sacred
to Georgians and signalized by no
memorial of iho great events which
endowed it with such hlstc-ie mem
ories.
Contribution!! for the restoration of
the battery and the erection of the
Oglethorpe monument will be receiv
ed by Mrs. Bark, or by Mrs. Harriet
Butts, regent of the Daughters of the
American Revolution at Brunswick.
The Constitution very cordially ap
proves the appeal made in the above
Dehalf and trusts tliat’Ueorgia patriot
ism may promptly prove adequately
liberal to answer all the-needs pre
ferred In this behalf by our patriotic
woni n. ‘
In connection with the m-onosect
Oglethorpe memorial, we wish to lend
our aid to the matter. Mrs. R. E.
•‘ark, the state regent, of the . Daugh
ters ot tire American Revolution, has
written to us on the subject, and we
are in hearty accord w.m the view
expressed in the Constitution.
As Frederica is located in Glynn
county, Brunswick should be deeply
interested in the movement, and we
sincerely trust our people will give
llu-ir support to this truly laudable
cause.
Every day has a story of industrial
development in Brunswick and Glynp
comuy.
