PAUNCEFOTE’S BODY
CONSIGNED TO TOMB
National Funeral Is Accorded
the Great Diplomat.
6ERVICE3 IN ST. JOHNS CHURCH
Every Department of the National
Government Was Represented as
Well as All Diplomatic Circles—Re
mains Will Ee Carried to England
Washington, May 29.—The remains
of the late Lord Pauneefote, British
ambassador to Washington, today
were accorded a national funeral in
token of the high esteem set by the
American people upon the personal
worth of the deceased and as an ac
knoledgment of the friendly feeling
which is cherished toward Great Brit
ain. Every department of tin* national
government was represented and na
tional diplomatic bodies of which for
so many years the late Lord Pauuce
fote Was dean were present, ambas
sadors. ministers and charges. In addi
tion to those the resident society of
the capital was fully represented.
The presence of 1,000 men in arms
was a visible sign of military partici
pation in the funeral. The church of
which tlie deceased was a member did
honor to liis memory by bringing to
Washington to conduct the services
the coadjutor bishop of Philadelphia,
tiie Rev. Macltay Smith, under whom
ho had sat.

Since Lord Pauncefote’s ib-ath Inst!
Saturday morning his remains have
been lying in state in the large salon
of the embassy building. The Brit
ish ensign stood at half staff over the
main doorway and a sweeping bow of
black crepe told of the presence of
death within the house. Soon after 10
o'clock this morning the sound of
marching feet and the slow notes of
funeral music gave notice of the ap
proach of the funeral escort. This was
was composed of the Second squadron
of the Second cavalry and the cavalry
band, the latter mounted on white
horses; the Fourth field battery, the
Third battalion of United States en
gineers and band and a battalion of
United States marines and band. Major
William M. Black commanded the en
gineers, Captain V. F. W. Cote the
battery and Captai|) L. M. Brett the,
cavalry. The soldiers were along on
each side of Coneneticut avenue and
the adjacent streets and stood at rest
while the clergymen and pallbearers
entered the embassy building.
The pallbearers were Herr Von Hoi
lbon the German ambassador; M. Jules
Camhon, the French ambassador;
Comte Cassini, the Russian ambassa
dor; Senor Don Manuel de Ashiroz,
the Italian amhassad-' r; Secretary
Hay, Speaker Henderson and Senator
O. M, Platt, the acting president pro
tern of the senate.
The services in St. John’s church in
their general contour were very simi
lar to those which marked the memo
rial service held at that church in
memory of the late Queen Victoria.
As the funeral party approached the
church the music of the organ and
harp were blended in splendid har
mony. The choir entered in their
black vestments singing the hymn,
"For All Thy Saints," followed by
Bishops Satterlee and Mackay Smith.
The casket was borne up the entrance
steps and then turning about Bishops
Satterlee and Mackay Smith preceded
it into the church, reading the scrip
ture verses beginning, "I am the res
urrection and the life, saith the ford,
and I know that my Redeemer liveth.”
At the foot of the chancel stops the
casket was lowered to tin- waiting
stand and then the first of the hymns
selected by Lady Pauneefote, "The
Saints of God, Their Conflict Past,"
was sung by tho choir. The burial
anthem taken from the Psalms was
sung to the old Gregorian chant.
The officiating bishop then read the
lesson for the burial of the dead taken
from the fifteenth chapter of the First
Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
When the lesson was finished the choir
sang tlie hymn “On the Resurrection
Morn Soul and Body Meet Again," and
then chanted the apostles creed.
The bishop then pronounced the last
words that will be spoken over the re
mains before their inferment at the
ancestral home at Preston, England.
The remains were taken directly to
Roc-k Creek cemetery, where they were
placed in the receiving vault, there to
remain until they are conveyed on a
United States warship to the home of
tho late Lord Pauacefoto of Preston.
