COUNCIL MET LAST NIGHT.
Transacted a Great Deal of Routine

City council met In their chamber
last night and transacted the regu
lar routine business.
T. W. Flanders was recommended
by) the Board of Health for the ad
ditional sanitary inspector.
Three bids for the material in the
old Baptist church were refused.
A resolution was passed, allowing
a discount of four per cent, to all
tho3e who pay their taxes for the
present year on or before July 5.

Strike Effects Keenly Felt.
New York, May 29. —Many Small
towns in New Jersey are beginning
to feel the scarcity of anthracite coal.
Suffern village has been in darkness
since Saturday night, having no elec
tric light. The steel plant there will
run out of coal today, ami it will be
necessary to lay 200 men off. Lamps
are now in use at Ridgewood. At
Spring Valley, N. Y., the silk mill, the
pipe factory and the shirt works, em
ploying 700 hands, will be shut down
Thursday because of lack of fuel.

New York. May 29.—Thomas H.
Griffiths, a Brooklyn cigar manufac
turer, has killed himself after telephon
ing to a hospital for an ambulance and

Green and Gaynor Case Del.-”-*:.,.
Montreal, May 29.—The Gaynor-
Greene case was called yesterday be
fore Judge Lafontainc. The lawyers
for the defense gave notice that a writ
of certiorari would issue from Quebec
demanding that Judge Lafontaine pro
' duce all the papers connected with
the extradition proceedings and that
the case would then be argued on its
merits in Quebec. An adjournment
was then taken until Thursday.
Detective Leaves Big Fortune.
New York, May 29.—James H. Burns
■ for 15 years a ward detective on the
, New York police force is dead at his
home in New Rochelle, leaving an es
tate said to be worth $300,00u. Burns
was detailed at the Eldridge street
station, but after the Loxow investiga
tion was placed on trial and dismissed
from the force. He was also indicted,
but when the trial was called his
bond of $5,000 was forfeited. He re
ntained for some timedn Europe and
then returned to this city, where he
demanded a trial The witnesses had
disappeared and the case was finally
dismissed.
Root Will Not Fight.
San Francisco, May 29.- Jack Root,
who was to have met Jack Gardner in
a finish fight at Carson on July i, has
telegraphed Bat Smith, of this city,
that he will have nothing to do with
the fight. Root claims that forfeits
have not been posted, but Harry Corbet
insists he has held *2.000 belonging to
Senator Livingston, of Nevada, repre
senting the promoters, and SSOO ot
Alec Greggaln’s money, posted .> a
side forfeit ever since the match war
