PUBLISHERS NOTICE.
The News Publishing Company de
sires It to be distinctly understood that
all legal advertisements must be paid
for in advance. We cannot afford to
devote our space to such advertise
ments and wait on the courts for the
money.
After Thursday all Georgia can
give thanks and get down to work
again.
it io ail over now not the* shout
ing, but the question is, who will
do the shouting.
The Terrell and mill factions aro
making a warm fight in Glynn. Pity,
the county could not go for both of
them.
The race for judge of the Bruns
wick circuit semes to he ft good 11a
Hired one..Both candidates are able
lawyers and in the election of eitfher,
the circuit will haw a good judge.
Wiley Williams, the. candidate for
prison commissioner, 13 clean, lion
est man of the people, is strongly,
endorse!! by his. home people, and
is worthy of the vote of every gen
uine Georgian.
Hon, \V, G. Brantley deserves the
praise of every loyal Brunswicklau
for 'als splendid work in the present
eonrgess. Ills efforts have been ably
sreondod by Senator Clay. The va
rious appropriations for Brunswick on
tlui bills now before congress, and
which have been practically agreed
to, aggregate a greater sum than all
the appropriations that have ever
bet t.jj made, 1 heivtUJ.'ore by congress
for this city.
Out on Glynn avenuo Jugde Hor
ace Dart, the veteran ordinary of
Glynn county lies critically ill, suffer
ing with a complication of ills, super
induced by a bullet wound received
while defending Dixie’s stars and
bars.
We trust this splendid Christian
gentleman will soon be at the post
he has held so long and so well, and
we are. sure all Bruunswlck will join
in the indulgence of this hope.
AN EXCELLEN PAPErT
Toe Atlanta Sunday Journal ts a
peach, full grown rosy lined, and
juicy.
Its initial number was a gem of
the art preservative and would put
to blussh many of the efforts of the.
Metropolitan press.
It covers every,' sphere of latter
day Journalism, is a faithful compel)
dlum of the doings of a day, a true
reflection of the sciences, arts and
literatures, and in all is a publication
llyaf docs credit to the section in
which it is published, and is. an bon
or to the fourth estate of the south
in general and Georgia in particular.
We wish the Sunday Journal an
abundance of success.
CUBAN SCHOOLHCUSES.
At the beginning of the American oc
cupation there was not to be found In
the entire island of Cuba a single pub
lic building which had been construct
ed for or was being devoted to public
school purposes, says Matthew E. Han
na in the June Atlantic. Every town
of any Importance contained a church
and a jail, and hospitals and barracks
were plentifully scattered all over the
island. Public funds had been lavishly
expended for this purpose, but not a
penny had been devoted to the con
struction of public school buildings. It
was necessary, therefore, to rent pri
vate dwellings for school buildings.
The style of architecture prevalent in
the Island rendered these buildings a I
most worthless in their original design,
and partitions had to be knocked down
in some instances and in others built
up, and the sanitary arrangements un
derwent a thorough remodeling. Al
most every available barracks, hospital
or jail in the island of Cuba has been
thoroughly renovated and converted
Into a modern school building, with the
very best pedagogical appliances and
equipment to lie obtained. Up to date
more than 8400,000 have been expended
for this object alone.
Almost every city of any size or Im
portance in the island has today at
least one school building of which It
may well be proud and which will
serve in the future ns a model for the
entire surrounding neighborhood. In
the city of Havana, for example, an
old hospital was converted Into a
school building containing thirty-three
classrooms, a drawing academy, kin
dergarten and manual training depart
ments, gymnasiums for girls and hoys,
shower bntiuß'snd other arrangements
in proportion. It Is safe to say that
there does not exist in the entire Unit
•<! States a more perfectly equipped
school, if in fact there are any that are
so complete.
In other places where this work has
been done it has been in tlm same thor
ough way. In other towns and cities
of tbo island which were fortunate
enough during the colonial period to
have no necessity for Jails, hospitals or
barracks entirely new buildings of
stone, concrete or wood have been con
structed. The first hard dressed stone
building of any kind erected in the is
land of Cuba during four centuries is
a school building in tin city of Sant!
ago now nearing eomplctlon.
