At Mcrna, 111., three lives were lost
and 2b people injured.
Laurel, a little town in Marshall
county, la., is said to have been wipe I
out by the fury of the storm.
Bloomington, 111., was hit severely
and buildings in ail parts of the city
were seriously damaged and traffic
blocked. So far as known no lives
were lost at Bloomington.
Wires were blown down in every
direction and it was with extreme dif
ficulty that any information wes c;o

early today to begin the work of re
storing the shattered lines.
The storm swept through the state
about midnight, accompanied b.y elec
trical dir,charges of a severe nature.
For seven hours Chicago could ob
tain no commercial communication
with the cities in Hie path of the
storm.
THREE LIVES LOST AT MERNA.
One Mar> Missing and Twenty Persons
Were Injured.
Bloomington, II!., June 12. Throe
lives werr lost and 20 people injured
at Merna, 10 miles north of here, in the
storm that visited tins vicinity about
midnight. ,
The dead:
Miss Lena Cahagan. of Leroy.
Mrs. Edward Mardin, of Leroy.
Miss Annie Killy, of Merna.
Mitchell Cunningham, of Merna, is
missing.
About 20 others were more or less
injured.
About 200 people were attending a
dance in the town hall when a torna
do wrecked the building, lifting the
reof and crushing in (he walls. Other
damage was done at this point, but
particulars are meager.
The storm in this city was very se
vere, but no lives were lost. The Illi
nois Wesleyan university was badly
damaged, many buildings were un
roofed, piate glass fronts blown in,
telegraph and telephone wires pros
trated and the streets rendered im
passable by falling trees. Street rail
road traffic is tied up and all railroad
trains are delayed by trees blown
across the tracks.
At Clinton the Chicago and Alton
roundhouse was demolished, but sc
far as known no lives were lost.
Three Killed at Tazewell, 111.
Pekin, 111., June 12.—A tornado pass
ed over Tazewell last night, killing
three and fatally injuring two persons
at Kingston mines south of there. The
dead are: Mrs. Thomas Murray and
infant and William McEwell. aged 2.

Perry Ordain New Rector at
Waycross.
The Waycross Journal of yesterday
says: Rev.R.i Russell was instituted priest -
in-charge of the Grace Episcopal church
Sunday.
Hie services were oonducted by Arch
deacon Cassels of Brunswick In a very
impressive manner. He was assisted by
Rev. J. J. R. Perry, rector of St. Athan
asius church in Brunswick.
Mr. A. M. Knight in behalf of the
vestrymen and members of Grace church
turned over the keyset the church to Rev.
Mr. Russell.
The institution sermon was preached by
Rev. Mr. Cassels. His subject was the
mission of Paul. His text was the
thirteenth and fourteenth verses from the
eleventh chapter of Romans. He spoke
of the duty of the rector to his people and
the duly of the church to the rector.
He held the attention of the congrega
tion throughout the entire sermon, which J
was an eloquent and masterly effort.
The service closed with tire communion j
service at which Rev. Air. Cassels ponli-j
treated.

Opposite Pekin, the river overflowed
its banks and covered 00,000 acres of
corn, which Is believed to have been
ruined.
Laurel, la., Reported Destroyed.

ports that the town of Laurel, in Mar
shall county, was destroyed by a tor
nado last, night. Owing to the wires
being down it is impossible to secure
definite knowledge as to the facts.
Laurel is in Jefferson township, Mar
shall county, and has a population of
1.000 people. The only means of
communication with the town from the
outside world is by way of the tele
graph line, located on a short branch
of the lowa Central railway. Messages
are now being sent to State Center and
other neighboring towns in the hope
of securing some information.
Cars Blown From Track.
Corwith, la., June 12. —A tornado
struck an empty train on the lowa
Central 5 miles west of here last night
and blew three cars from the track
while the train was running i!0 miles
an hour, leaving the engine and two
last coaches on the track. No one
Colonel Arthur Lynch Arrested.
London, June 12. —Colonel Arthur
Lynch, who fought with the Boors In
South Africa and who in November
last was elected to represent Galway
in the house of commons, was arrest
ed tills morning on his arrival at New
Haven frdtn Dieppe, France, Colonel
Lynch, who was accompanied by It's
wife, was brought to London and was
afterwards taken to the Bow street po
lice station.
