PUBLISHERS NOTICE.
The News Publishing Company de

all legal advertisements must be paid

devote our space to such advertise

money.

The first watermelons of the sea

Can't the city council be prevailed
upon to make some disposition of that
unsightly old market building on New
castle street. Really it Is an eyesore.
Tne new president of Hayti has not
yet found time to write his executive

messages while dodging bullets Is con

the advice of his patron Mark Hanna,

A MATRIMONIAL FRAUD.
When you read the matrimonial ad
vertisements and learn that a lone
some and handsome woman, who pos
sesses a fortune In her own right, is
yearning for a manly| man to care
.for her and t;iie money, don’t you be
lieve it. Don’t even waste a stamp
investigating. Money doesn’.t grow
on hushes, and beauty and sweet
dispositions do not have to advertise
for husbands!.
A recent advertisement follows:
"Tall, handsome, well-educated,
wealthy, athletic girl, 21 years, speak
ing several languages, wishes to cor
respond with a matrimonially-inclined
gentleman.’’
Sounds good, ' doesn’t it? Not a
hint of selfishness. One can almost
see Dianna opening the mail, her
cheeks colored with blushes at the
wholesale offerings of love.
To is lady of several languages
lived in Newburg. N. Y. Men in hun

letters from all the big cities; ardent
epistles, and cash, too. Even an ath

And then the police arrested this

Good enough for the fools who per

as an example of the sickening fol

Good wives are seldom found in the

WALTER HOWARD.
The untimely death of Walter How
ard, the well known newspaper man,
which occurred In Asheville, N. 0.,
Wednesday la a distinct loss to journal
ism in the very broadest sense. Mr.
Howard was essentially a newspaper
man, whether doing war stories from
the capital of the Gem of the Alillcs
or filling special assignment work,
covering great diplomatic problems,
at the Court of St. James', he was at
all times the able, energetic and, above
all, conscientious reflector of things as
they wore and not as he would have
them.

which came from beyond the stars.
His talent was as versatile as it was
refined and lie clayed upon literature
much as a musician might his lute.
Now hurling bitter invective and
stinging rebuke, through a graceful
metamorphose, all his own, he traced
the softest tendrils, and portrayed

A few years ago Howard was, in
every scintilla and suggestion, a mag
niflcent apeciment of manhood, gifted,
pulsating in every fibre with a laud
able jimbition with every promise of
an abundance of success, but long
liourfe of toll, exposure and other hard
ships incident to newspaper work told
its story and that dreaded disease —con
sumption—laid hold upon.him, and, as
Is usually, the case, won the victory.
Though called away in the very~zcn
itli of young manhood and at a time
when his cherished ambiliona were
within his grasp, Walter Howard has
left a monument in American journal
ism that the historian of the future
cannot be unmindufu) of.
He was the radiating genius of the
Atlanta Daily News, and through this
medium probably became more in

in any of his previous professional ser

A Loudon newspaper, in fulsome

markets the country has ever known. It is rumored that John W Gates is
backed by a pool of $250,000,000, com-posed of J. Pierpont Morgan, Marshall

We would advise the immediate purchase of all good dividend paying stocks,
