THURSDAY MORNING
A trunk tournament, in which pygmy prices play an important part—
and we add with emphasis that he who hesitates loses a good trunk It
doesn't matter whether you need a trunk just now—come and see them
any way. All of these trunks are heavy earning covered, strong hard
wood slats on alt—some sole leather bound, some iron bound, some have
two leather straps, heavy brass locks, some linen, some two trays with
hat box compartment, two bottoms, one of which is sheet iron, ami not
one in the lot hut will defy the fiercest luggage smasher that ever flung,
kicked or jumped on an unoffending trunk. Some of those trunks are
great, handsome, swell,

[Farmer Dale’s Mistake.
I was on n wheeling tour and
stopped for supper and all night at a
forlorn looking farmhouse. I was sur
prised to see no woman about, all the
work being done by the owner of the
place, Ezra Dale. After supper 1 light
ed a pipe and.sat on the porch smok
ing. Dale came and sat beside me.
“You have finished your evening
chores early,” I said. “When my wile
is without a servant, she never gets
the dishes washed before 9 o’clock.”
“Waal, ye see, I don't do it that
a-way. t wash dishes oueet a week.
Then I put ’em all on ter the wagon,
drive 'em inter the creek, take a mop,
an' when 1 get through they shine like
pewter.”
“Don’t you think a wife would be
handy? She could do your mending.”
"Don't need no wife. 1 got needles
an' thread an’ buttons. There's my
kit.” And be banded me a ease con
taining Hie articles mentioned and no
more.
“Where’s your thimble?” I asked.
“Don't need no thimble. I tried onev
oneet an’ couldn't use it. It's handier
to git the head of the needle ag in the
wall an’ drive it through that: a way.”
“Did you never have a love affair?”
“Yes, oneet. It was when i was a
young feller -very young an’ very
green. I used to look on a gal as a
heathen would look on a sacred im
age. There was a little one livin’
across the creek. Farmer Owens'
daughter Daisy. I’urty? Ye bet, ail’
gentle as a kitten. She lul. a shine to
me. I was a fair lookin’ young feller
then, straight an’ slim an' light on my
feet. One evenin' I was a passin’
Farmer Owens’, and Daisy come mu
llin' otlt with her linger a Heedin' an'
asked lire ter tic it up fur her. 1 had
tor git her arm under mine somehow
an’ hold on ter her hand an’ wrap the
linen strip un’ wind the string an’ a
lot of things nil at the same time.
While i was a-doin’ of it her hair got
ag'in my cheek, an’ waul, I lost my
head an’, turnin’, put an arm around
her nn’ kissed her.
“Do ye know, stranger, I’ve since
made up my nfind she done it all a pur
pose. I b’licvo she cut her finger on
tentionnlly. 1 tell ye, women folks is
tricky.”
“I think that was a very nice fem
inine way of catching your attention,”
I remarked. “Go on.”
“That’s jist what i did do. I went on
from day ter day, week ter week, tilt
it seemed ter me If anything happened
between me un’ that gal I’d collapse.
Somethin’ did happen. Farmer Owens
tuk a farm linn’ fur The hivin', an'
wliat did Daisy do hut take him out in
her buggy that her father bought fur
her at Christmas an’ drive right by
that lions*- a-purpose ter show him oil
ter me. 1 tell ye, stranger, she had the
Wickedest eye in her ye ever see.”
“Another feminine trait,” I observed.
“Miss Daisy was evidently a woman.”
“She was a woman, stranger, all' the
worst kind of a one.” Dale went on
lugubriously. “She broke me all up. 1
jist rented this farm an’ went away.
I didn’t c-oine hack fur ten years. Then
I made up my mind that women folks
wa’sn’t vvutli won-yin’ about, an’ i tuk
my farm ag’in an’ began ter work It.
The fust time 1 went by Farmer
Owens’ Daisy come out she had grown
ter he a line lookin’ young woman of
twenty-six an' wliat do ye suppose
siie did?”
“I can’t imagine.”
“Asked me if I wouldn't tie up a cut
finger. She had the same wicked look
in her eye* sho liad when she drove that
lopsided farm ban’ by my house ten
years afore. Women is the persistent
est critters I ever see. I jist squared
off an’ said: 'Ye don’t git me that
a way ag’in. Ye dong it oncet, ail’
that's enough,’ Rut. do ye know, stran
ger, she was so slick about it that in
'live minutes I had my arm about her
an’ she was a-restin’ her bead on my
shoulder. She was a ei-yin’, too—erj'iu’
croekerdile tears, no doubt,
“Waal, we was engaged, but it didn’t
las’ long. Tlie question come tip as
ter whether we’d he married by a jus
tie*- or a parson. I don’t like parsons
myself, an’ l wanted a justice. Daisy
wanted a parson, an’ she was so blame
set about it that I reckoned if she was
as obstinate about a small matter like
j that slic’d be wantin’ ter run the farm.
1 so I called the thing off, an’ I’ve been
livin’ alone here ever since.”
“Mr. Dale,” I said, “you have mis
taken natural feminine traits for gen
era! cussedness.”
“That’s what they is, I tell ye, stran
ger. “Ye don’t understand.”
“You have declined to give up that
which to a woman is a great deal,
while to you it is nothing. Miss Owens
was right to insist on being married by
a parson, and you were ungenerous to
refuse her. Now, Jet me give you a hit
of advice. Miss Owens is stili single?
Yes. Well, go to her and tell her that
when you (irst met her you were a
blundering idiot and that later you
were an obstinate brute. /Say that if
she will overlook your past errors you
will spend your life in doing penance.”
“Why, stranger, if I was ter do that
I’d never have my own way about
anything afterward.”
“It is the only way to have your
o.wp way. ghouteverything pith a vvo-

"Ye don't purait it! Say, stranger,
wtmtisort ofla mnikeupfdo ye call that
anyway?”
