DUMONT WANTS A MILLION.
Mr. Santos Dumont says lie will fly
across the* Atlantic for a million of
dollars. If Dumont can accomplish
this feat the million Is as good ns
made already. The moment the mys
tery of aortal navigation has been
solved, by him or any one else, his
fortune is made If too young aero
naut has an air ship that wilt fiv suc
cessfully, it seems that he would he
anxious to demount rate the fact, for
as soon as he does so there will he
any number of monied men anxious to
take bold of the scheme and push it
along for him.
The world has been impatiently
waiting for centuries for a successful
air ship, but so far no one has dem
onstrated his ability to construct a
machine that would do so. M. Santos-
Dumont comes us near the mark, per
haps. as any one and lie seems nearer
to success than auy of his predeces
sors in the work. He has made two
or three trips in his ship which nave
the appearance of successful ones. His
trip around tue cnlel tower in Pattis,
it sefetns, would have been a complete
success had it not been for an acci
dent to the machine of so- a part of
the machinery, which is liable to hap
pen to any machinery. His second at
tempt also seems to nave been a sue
cess, although he did not secure the
prize offered because he did not make,
She trip within a few seconds of the
required time. Still, there is some
uoubt as to his ability to successfully
navigate the air. He has not demon
strated tho fact conclusively, and un
til he does so his invention will be of
little value a>s a money-maker. Biit
if he sha.il prove that lie can suc
cessfully? fly across tho Atlantic ocean
he can quickly make not only one, but
as many millions of dollars as he
might want.
ON THE GOVERNORSHIP.
An August magazine has rather an
IntcreattnK article on the r cent race
for governor in Georgia, an artieb
the peculiarities of which have caus
ed some little comment among the
politicians.
The article in question Is publish
ed anonymously, no mention of the
writer's name being made above, be
low, or In the table of contents.
The peculiar feature of the article
and tho one that has been most com
mented upon Is the fact that the
name of Hon. Dupont Querry, of Bibb
who we. Bone of the candidates, was
entirely omitted. The article states
that there were several candidates in
the race, and then- goes on to show
that the race was practically between
Hen. Joseph M. Terrell, the success
ful candidate, and Colonel J, H. Es
fill, of Savannah, boln of whose pict
ures are published with it.
The writer pays a high compliment
to Colonel Estlll, saying i, was no
weakness on his pact that: resulted
in his defeat, but. the unusual strength
of the successful candidate. It. gives
a brief explanation of the democratic
primary, showing now much such
elections are held In Georgia, and
pays a pnetty tribute to Mr. Terrell
and Colonel Estlll.
But no mention whatever Is made
of the part Mr. Gtterry played in the
campaign, nor of the causes he advo
cated-. The general belief is express
ed ta:<t the article was written by
some Georgian, but nobody appear.-!
to know just who is responsible for
it. _
