PUBLISHERS NOTICE.
The New* Publishing Company de
alres It to be distinctly understood that
all legal advertisements must be paid
for In advance. We cannot afford to
devote our space to such advertise
ment* and wait on tbs courts for the
money, .
The News desires the subscribers
who are behind In their subscriptions
to come up and pay at once as their
papers will be discontinued unless a
settlement is made. It is unfair and
unjust to make The News send you
a paper and then when the collector
calls refuse to pay for It.

Pension Commissioner Ware is

The Brunswick News says it prints

BAD STATE OF AFFAIRS.
Two western cities have recently
been objects of public attent.on be
cause of the revelations of corruption
in their respective governments. In
St. Louis it was discovered that mem
bers of the city council had received
bribes from a local corporation and
flagrantly sold out the city’s most
valuable franchises. In Minneapolis
there ’has been uncovered a system
atic partnership between the police
department, and a gang of gamblers
and confidence men. The situation in
the Minneapolis city Is particularly
disgraceful.
Several successive )irials of sus
pected parties have brought the fads
to light. It has developed unit mem
hers of the police force voluntarily
approached well-known gamblers and
offered lo combine efforts in a scheme
to defraud Whatever victims might he
induced to enter the trap. Tin- < onli
donee men were to ply their vocation
not only with the protection hill tie
assistance of the police, and iin - prof
*t, of course, were to he equally di
vided. It was testified that Me coin
binnl ion was effected and that il work
0,l successfully lor some time. One
detective confessed tnat members of
the force had actually assisted the
gamblers in robbing their victims and
iwo detectives were accused of being
accessories to the cracking of a sab.
The chief of police and the mayor
of Minneapolis are brothers, and it is
charged that they were at the head of
scheme. With several captains of (he
police force and detectives these two
high officials have been indicted and
both nave left the city. It is presum
ed that tne chief of police docs not in
tend to return to stand trim, out his
brother is said to lie suffering from
menial and physical collapse.
