EDISON ELECTRIC MOTOR.
Thomas A. Edison s intention to test
his new storage battery electric motor
next month in the 500-raile reliability
run for automobiles, between Boston
asd New York, is certain to attract
widespread attention among the launch
and motor manufacturers of the
world. While the test Is to be that of
an automobile motor, it will, if suc
cessful, be an adequate test of a
launch or pleasure-boat, motor, and for
this reason an automobile run will be
as interesting to those whose minds
are given to water vehicles as it can
be to those whose thoughts center
about horseless carriages.
Mr. Edlsos’s claims for his new
motor are that it is simple, that it is
powerful and that it may ho run for
100 miles without recharging. Up to
this time the electric motor has gain
ed but little headway in tno launch
world, owing to the fact that it was
available only for short runs, and a
boat equipped with an electric motor
could not be taken far from a charg
ing station. If, as Edison claims, he
can make a motor-good for a run of
lot) miles without recharging then he
lias solved the problem of the oLv.trlc
launch, and his invention will be bail
cd with delight.
CHANCE* FOR CANNERIES.
Referring to the fact that an East
ern firm had bought, packed and ship
ped 1500 barrels of pears from Way
cross, Oa., the Herald of that town
sa.d that It afforded a text for a leng
thy sermon oil Southern neglect of
opportunity, and added:
“We waste what a Yankee commun
ily would live upon. We throw
away thousands of bushels of vege
tables and fruits in their season, and
when they are gone buy Lie canned
goods put up by our considerate north
ern friends, who know that we must
nave tnein. Com from Matne, peaches
from Jersey, tomatoes from Maryland
and even sweet potatoes raised asd
vanned In Massachusetts have been
sold in the Wayerosa market. We arc
sleeping over our rights and throwing
away our opportunities. We must
turn over several new leaves If we
would he Independent, and as the nat
ural outcome, happy.”
The same conditions referred lo by
the Herald exists In this section and
we sincerely hope that the day will
soon come when we will have enough
canning factories to encourage the
farmers.
Our truck growers at present must
either “piddle” in the local market or
ship and run the chances of a loss
when if we had canning factories the
farmer who knows where to sell his
products would naturally be encourag
ed to plant more.
