Mr. Schwab does not stand much of
a chance of “cold feet" at Monte

understand this little paragraph.
Who are the tlrst jurors sclented?
the commissioners. They are intelli
gent and are certainly experienced,
when it comes to jury duty, they
have been there before.
The uiacon News says: "A
party of Georgians passed through
Valdosta yesterday nil route for
Canada. Tne.t were converted
Mormons. \V,e wil) got evdn with
v auada yet." We think the shoe is
on the other foot. Georgia's gain is
Canada’s loss.
The Birmingham Age-Herald notes
with interest that a Missouri editor,
who threatened to write and print an
article entitled "Hell and Who Will
Be There," has been warned by the
entire town agalns he publication of
libellous matter, ami Che Charleston
News and Courier thinks it might he
as well, on the wnole. to make the
warning national in its scope.
GEORGIA MARBLE WINS.
Georgia marble is again victorious
as will be seen by the following spec
ial from Tampa:
“The largest marble contract ever
given in the South has been awarded
to tno Blue "Ridge Marble Company, of
Nelson. Ga.
"It was a notable victory for Geor
gia marble after a sharp contest wtith
the largest Vermont marble company.
‘The United Stales government
building, to be erected at this port at
a cost of |300,040. will lie built mainly
of marble, and will be fitted up for
custom house and postofflee purposes.
"Georgia marble won a distinct vic
tory In this competition as it did in
Hie bidding for the new department of
justice building at Washington. Un
der the government’s tests, which
were unusually severe, Georgia marble
was found to lie clearly superior lo
the Vermont article. The competition
for the Tampa contract was all the
more spirited, because of the prefer
ence frequently given to Georgia rnar
.’-id recently by toe federal government
and the contractors of other public
buildings,
"It will require more than two hun
dred carloads of marble for the gov
ernment building at Tampa, and the
fact that Georgia must supply (hem
will increase still further the-fame of
Hie marble of that slate.."
- GEORGIA'S TAX RATE.
Tiie tax rale In Georgia is lower litis
year than it was last by 14 cents on
the thousand dollars. Last year it was
85.44 and this year it lias been placed
at $5.30 on the SI,OOO. The lowest
rate in about 20 years was in 1883
when it was just $2.50 on the thou
sand. bill It gradually climbed up
until four years ago it reached the
high figure of $0.21, The greater part
of this increase, it is noted, waa dur
ing the ton years from 1888 to 1 898.
Alt .ougTi the rate now is nearly a
dollar less than it was four years ago.
tne state will pay a million dollars
more to public schools and pensions
than it did at that time.
The new rqte is based upon an in
crease in property values of $10,790,-
000 over last year. 'Fne amount of
revenue collected last year with iho
rate at $5.44 was $2,483,658. The
amount this year with the rate at
$5.30 will be $2,170,930 nr a decrease
oi $0,727. However, it Is thought that
this will be sufficient for slate pur
poses.
During iho last 15 years the appro
priation for ordinary purpose* of gov
ernment, including the interest on
lae public debt and the support of the
various state institutions, has been
about the same as-usual, but t’ae free
schools and pensions appropriations
increased year after year at a rapid
rate, as is shown by the following pay
niellis for these purposes:
