MAKING GREAT PROGRESS.
Inventor Marconi has a quiet, mod
esl way of going about his work, yet
reports of progress in bis attempt to
make a commercial success of wire
less telegraphy come rather constant
ly. It is only a short while since news
came that he had catatillmud comma
ideation between Newfoundland and
England, and yesterday word .strived
that an Italian cruiser,
government at Signor Marconi's dispo
sal, had sailed from a station in tin
southwest of England to Nova Scotia
and uad oommmih-atod dally during
the voyage witli the Kngllslt station.
Tills success brine ! elosar the day
when Kurope ami Annirlt a, as predict
ed by Marconi, will have a satisfae
tory system of communication with
out wires. While tile public’s thought
about wireless telegraphy s almost
wholly connected with experimental
work, it is to beret ailed that ever.
"
tical application of the system is
made. There are three score or more
steamships equipped with wireless tel
egraphic apparatus. They can vom
niuaicate with others w'uile they are
steaming across the seas, and it is
easy to imagine how important such 1
communication of regular land sta
tions similarly equipped. Every day
report* of passing steamships arc sent
from Nantucket lightship to New York"*
tiy the Marconi system. Only a day
two ago Berlin reported that experi
ments in tne German navy had proved
tiie prat leal utility of the wireless sys
tem there. So that the matter is no
longer wholly in the experimental
stage. A company with plenty of eai>-
ital has just been incorporated in Can
ada to extend the commercial use
of tho system, so that lack of means
is not apt to delay any justifiable
commercial development.
RAPIDLY PLAYING OUT.
It appears that the phosphate busi
ness is rapidly playing out as the fol
lowing from the Gainesville News will
show:
The Royal Phosphate Company, one
of the richest companies engaged in
the mining of phosphate in this coun
try, lias closed down one of its plants
and will not operate the machinery
again.
This appears to be tne beginning of
the end of the phosphate industry in
Alachua county. It. is a fact that the
deposits are fast playing out and that
there have been no new ones found
during tho past year. Some of the
large companies have spent thousands
of dollars prospecting this summer,
but the result has been very unsatis
factory, There have been hut. a few
deposits found and the indications are
that Che field lias been pretty well
■i enrolled.
Phosphate miners now have no liesi
tajtcy in saying that the phosphate In
dustry so far as this county Is con
cerned, is on tne decline and that with
in the next two yeat-s there will be
lint one tu.rd the number of plants
in operation in mis county that there
£p. today. This fact has been
demonstrated all summer and there is
not a miner who is not confident that
the field has been nearly all worked
out tnal a few months operation will
•lose it forever.
There are at present about thirty
mines in mat territory, but some of
them are not getting out much rock In
fact, mere are not the good deposits
there used to bo and mining Is more
- pensive anu difficult than it was a
few years ago, or when the irdusny
,\as in ii< p>i:ne. Some of ihtse mines
have moved this year and others Will
have to mo-c to better fields or aban
don the industry.
