“LISTEN TO THE MOCKING BIRD.”
Septimus Winner,, who died the
other day, was a musical genius and
had the rare, and happy faculty of
writing songs and adapting them to
music. None of his poems can be ac
counted of a high order or of artistic
quality in words, but his music, to
which they were wedded, made them
njcue popular 'and permanent than the
productions of more gifted hards. His
‘ Listen to tne Mocking Bird" is said
to have netted to tlie publishers sev
eral millions of dollars, but he sold it
lor $35. He came near causing a re
volt In the Army of the Potomac, ut
ter McClellan's dismissal hy a song en
titled “Give Us Back Our Old Com
mander." Yet very iew people knew
the name of the composer, in this gen
eration. The Baltimore News, refer
ring to his most celebrated composi
tion, says:
“That nimble contagious melody has
been sung in more parlors and played
at more Sunday-school entertainments
tiian any other piece of music ever
written, it has been ground out of
street organs and pianos by the bil
lion. Its notes have usually selected
the flute as the means for ueir escape
into the atmosphere, hut in the halls
of vaudeville they have been played
upon musical glasses, sleigh bell*! cow
beds, xylophones, tin cans, anvils, rail
road spiked and all the other instru
ments known the vaudeville alone.
Mr. Winter is dead, but ms song goes
marking on. lie also wrote "What Is
Home Without a Mother?" and “Shall
We Gather at the River?"
Mr. Winner was one of the most vo
luminous of musical composers ano
seemed to be master of all instru
ments. Wo (lought if any inusleiim of
nls day was so widely endowed in als
rat, although there were, greater, much
greater composers. Yet senp* of his
songs will probably outlast toe more
'ambitious strains of bis superiors in
melody. Many have written songs,
but could not furnish the music for
them. Many have had the musical tal
ent but not the gift versification.

curing the evil. Persuade mill owners
to prohibit child labor in their own

Patience With Eccentricity.
Many of the leading people in Eng
lish society regarded Thomas Carlyle
with a feeling almost akin to reverent"
deli at when he chose to behave like
au "movant boor in tlmir drawing
rooms, even taking bis scat, tt is said,
unhidden in the presence of the queen
This generation, however, has little pa
tience with such eccentricities.
It was an English bishop who. when
the historian Freeman bad worn out
his patience w4th his rudeness, intro
duced him to a waiting audience as
“the distinguished scholar Fiat so ad
mirably describes and illustrates the
savagery of oqr ancestors.”

to use when an accidental burn from
acids or alkalis is encountered. Nitric

may. A llrnb burned with acids must
be plunged in cold water and kept
there, so tiiat the water may* dilute
the traces or'the acid in the skin as
much as possible. When acid burning
causes injury, the water should be ren
dered alkaline by adding soda to eoun
