FINANCIAL RECORDS CITY OF BRUNSWICK
Brunswick, Ga., Nov. 28th, Uo£
In Council proceedings, dated January 7th, 1901, Mr. E. H. Mason, Chairman
of the Finance committee of Council, published to our citizens the following:
l our committee is pleased to report to you a very great reduction in the float
ing debt, which in the year 1894, amounted to the enormous sum of $12<3,<>56.06 t
divided as follows: ’
Open accounts $ 6(5,076.18
Outstanding notes - . . - 57 054'28

Ihe annual reports sworn to by former CJcrk Bodet, now on file together with
balance sheets and ledger, show the tollowing conditions to have existed on Jan

As an asset to this floating debt (which Mr. Mason said was only $51,291.84)
there were two items, viz., Taxes,,jnd Executions uncoiiected, which Mr. Mason
puts down in ns statement as $15,000.00 The most diligsnt efforts on the part of
the Maish 1!, Clerk and I reasurer succeeded in realizing from them $8,256.71, (the
remainder is almost entirely worthless,) aud with cash memorandums, and cash
turned over by the retiring acting I reasurer Bodet, of $400.72, made up assets of

OUTSTANDING FLOATING INDEBTEDNESS JANUARY 1, 1901.
According to Mr Mason - $51,291.84 Gross
According to tlie records - 56,934.66 Net
Showing that the NET FLOATING INDEBTEDNESS, when the control of the
ffy s all-firs were turned over to the officials elected by the Good Government
Club, and alter nearly seven years of the services of Mr. Mason as mayor and alder
man, was ( ,Rb A I L:R by $10,900.25 than it was January 1, 1894.
I he record of this present administration is one that we point to as being un
paralleled in the history of Brunswick. In January of 1901, confronted with a
floating debt o! $6- ~92.09 with actual cash of $22.60 in the treasury, this adminis
lation by haid work, succeeded in collecting out of the remnants left over of un
coMecteu taxes and old executions, cash memorandums, etc., the total of $8,657.43,
which, as belore stated, left us facing a net deficiency of $56,931.60, the largest net
floating indebtedness on record. ,
On September 30th, 1902, the condition of affairs shows a marked change-
Outstanding notes ----- $27 500 00

, , . „ * $32,332.0.5
Less cash in the treasury ... j 4;;p 57
Out ol the still uncollected taxes from the digest of 1902, it is conservatively esti
mated that we will pay all current expenses to December 31st, 1902, and further
reduce the floating indebtedness $8,000.00, making a total reduction of about $41,000
withing two years.
