In reading over the court proceed
ings of a neighboring county some
days ago wo noticed that a prisoner
was tried and convicted of simple
larcency, he had become attneded to
the coat of a friend, and was given
twelve months for his fun. A little
further down the column a man was
mentioned who had been tried ami
found guilty of stealing several hun
dred dollars and he was sentenced to
six months. This teaches us the les
son that me must not fool with small
things.

A great deal has been written alxmt
t he diminution of commerce under I he
American flag, but though pal riot,ism
may deplore that said flag is so seldom
displayed on blue water, it must not be
forgotten that not only natural causes
are responsible for this order of things.
In the early ydavspf American history
the shipowners were t lie wealthy class,
and t hough the loading of one of these
clipper ships, sa.v a vessel of two tons,
had jo he done by manual labor, and
every single package lalmriotmly hoist
ed into her what was then considered
immense hold, in t lie vernacular of the
Captain, “there was money in it,"and
one may be assured that as soon as
there is a promise of there being as
much profit In deep-sea commerce as
there is in interprisesthat now engage
I heir at tention, t he inhabitants of t his
country will !■ quick to grasp then)-
porl unity. In the days of yore when:
thinking of profit or wealth the Amer
ican instinctively looked oceanward,
and the beautiful vessels of a couple
of generations ago testified to
our ingenuity and enteprise*
With the bit roduet ion of railroads (tie
people moved westward, where they
found speedier avenues lo hi alt li, leav
ing ocean t rade to foreigners. Amer
ica is a world sutliciont unto itself,
and not another large nation is in a
position to claim that its marine trade
is of minor importance.
No foreign compet It ion. however, is
allowed in our coast ing t rude. and the
finest of steel steamships, as well as an
immense licet of schooners, give em
ployment to an army of men who have
riant hail inclinat ions.
While I lie size and speed of ocean
mail boats has lieen steadily increas
ing, it seems now Ihat a limit has
been reached, and as said increase,

sult in an increase in profits, the ship
owners have naturally called a hall,
and the largest ocean greyhound at
present is expected to remain so with

The coasting schooner also has heen

Lawson is the only 7-master and Ihe
largest sailing vessel afloat. When
