HELP THEM.
The people of the little city Ol
Gainesville are in distress; they
have been visited by a calamity that
has shocked and grieved the entire
State: the mayor of that city has is
sued a call for aid. Will the people of
lirunswiek stand by and not lend a
helping hand in this case?
We suggest to the mayor and the
members of the city council and to
the members of the board of trade,
that a meet ing of the people of this
city lie held tortile purpose of raising
funds to aid the people of our sister
city. There are many reasons why
lirunswiek should respond very
promptly to all communities in trouble.
We are late now, and it is to be hoped
that the matter will not be delayed
any longer. The case is a pit iable one,
and one that really deserves and should
receive attention at our hands.
Let's act.
THE WRONG ROAD.
A fow days since "Big Jim' 1 Brady,
aged seventy-eight years, a notorious
burglar of thirty years ago. was kilied
by a train, lie had just left the West
chester, N. V., poor house, where he
was admitted three years ago in a
starving condition and very siek. The
Courier-Journal says this is a fresh and
effectual illustration that the inge
nuity and energy devoted to criminal
pursuits would insure a comfortable
living and an easy competence if ap
pealed to honest labor is a truism.
When Brady's dead body was picked
up by the side of the railroad, there
was tightly clutched in his hand a bag
containing a complete set of burglar's
tools of the most modern description.
One of them was an electric torch, de
cidedly anew thing in burglary, it
turned out that the kit of tools was his
own handiwork, constructed with the
rudest sort of instruments, but of ex
cellent workmanship. Seventy-eight
years old and feeble as he must have
been, he had struggled away from his
place of refuge obviously to return to
his old life of desperation and crime.
According to tire Courier-Journal,
Bradly belonged to t he higher classes of
criminals, lie was an expert bauk
burglar, and it is said no safe lock was
invented that could defeat his skill.
ITe did some very profitable jobs in his
line, the totalbis “loot ings” amount
ing, it Is said, to half a million dollars.
Yet all he got out of Ills fortune and
for the desperate chances he took,
were long years in prison, shatter
ed health, and death unwept and
alone uncier the engine wheels of an
express t rain. Jlad lie devoted his un
questioned abilities as a mechanic to
legitimate pursuits, lie might have tie
come a great {manufacturer. As Ihe
Journal says, he chose the wrong road
of lift, and was sorely punished even
on this earth.
A GREAT SEASON.
According to the National I’rovis
ioner This lias been a great .season for
“hen fruit.” Tliis popular and nutri
tious food of high value lias not only
been in demand on account of high
prices of meats of ail kinds, but it has
also been in evidence. In the more
northern latitudes the egg season is on
from April Ito July. With usinOeor
gia it, begins usually a month earlier.
This is the season of the hem's great
est productivity. The farmer's barn
yard is a noisy locality. During this
period, observes the ITovisioner, the
fresh-meat man is heard to constantly
complain';t hat “the meat business is
rotten.” The eggs are; however, fresh
and the most numerous. Thedullness
in the fresh-meat line is the result of
the egg and meat competition for the
table. The poultry product w ins and
gives sympathetic tone to the ham and
bacon market, as ham or bacon and
eggs travel together, or in omelette
form, as a breakfast food. The extent
of the spring competition of eggs wit h
resli meats may lie gauged by the fact
that from about the middle of March
until .1 one l. r >, there are about 7.j<>,000,-
000 eggs handled daily by the jobbers
of the United States. For the season
of ninety days named that: would
amount, t o (17,Ji00,000,000 eggs. The egg
season furnishes an over-production
for consumption. The price is then
low. The surplus find their way int o
cold storage, for fall and winter use.
The Lenten season gives fresh meat its
hardest forty-day pull. Meats could
forgive prices a lot of Fridays for the
slightness of their blow as compared
with the egg competition of Lent,
Cold storage has been responsible for
the all-the-year competition which
meats feel from eggs. The incubators
also help poultry by relieving the set
ting lien.
