“Superstition seems to be connected
In the minds of most people with wo
men, ladders, rabbits’' feet and horse
shoes," said the young girl at the piano.
“Asa matter of fact, however, 1 know
that men are fully as superstitious as
the women of my acquaintance, and
sometimes more so. One young man of
my acquaintance, for instance, who
has literary yearnings and who feels
sore he could astonish the public with
hla brilliant stories if he could only get
some editor to accept them, spends his
summers in the Country gathering In
spiration, local color and—four leaf

to his hallroom in the city, writes sto

with each consignment to the editors a
four leaf clover. Sometimes the arti

Wcribes his success to the taliAunn.
Hpre often, bowevwe. they are re

what leisure hours he has in trying to

his manuscripts. Isn’t that the limit in

Origin of Uslliensllctl Signs.
The sign of addition ts derived from
the initial letter of the word "phis."
In making th# capital letter It was
made more and more carelessly until
th# top part of the "p" was finally
placed near the ocuter; hence the plus
sign, as wo know iL was gradually
peached.
The sign of subtraction was derived
from tbe word "minus.” The word was
first contracted In m. n. s. with a hnrl
sontal line above to Indicate that some
of the letters had been left out. At last
the letters were omitted altogether,
leaving only the short line.
The multiplication sign was obtained
by changing the plus sign lnto*tlie let
ter "x." This was done because mul
tiplication 1* but a shorter form of ad
dition.
Division was formerly Indicated by
placing tlie dividend above a horizontt
line and tbe divisor below. In order to
save space in printing the dividend was
placed to the left and the divisor to the
right. After years of "evolution" the
two “d’s" wore omitted altogether, and
simple dots set iu the plac* of each. As
with the others, the radical sign waa
derived from the Initial letter of tbs
word “radix.”
The sign of equglity was first used
in the yeur 1557 by a sharp mathema
tlclau. who substituted it to ovoid fro
quently repeating the words "equal to.”
