Sonp In Shaving:.
In spite of the fact that those who
use the razor frequently cut them
selves. yet It is rarely that anything
more serious than a cut follows, the
slight wound generally healing quick
iy, and the risk of sepiiemiuia arising
in this way would seem to be almost
ail. In the majority of cases, there
fore. it Is clear that the razor blade
must be bacteriologically clean—i. e..
free from the septic matter —which
may be attributed to the fact that
probably it is dipped into hot sterilized
water before use or else that the soap
lather is antiseptic. The latter expla
nation seems the more probable of the
two. The amount of soap rubbed on
the skin is considerable if the shaving
is to be in any degree comfortable, and
sonp has considerable antiseptic power,
a G per cent solution being sufficient to
destroy the typhoid bacillus. There
ean be little doubt, therefore, that the
skin is rendered sterile by the liberal
application of soap, and this fact is in
layer of any cut that may be made re
maining healthy and without any seri
ous consequence.
In a word, soap in the operation of
shaving not only facilitates the proc
ess. but plays the same valuable role
when the shaver Is unlucky enough to
cut himself as does the antiseptic in
surgery* ,—l.ancet.
Lost Arts of Childhood.
“We hear a good deal these days
about the lost arts. I wonder if the
world realizes that some of the most
proclous arts of childhood are In dan
ger of becoming extinct. How man,
boys todey make a kite properly
hung and with a tail sufficient to bal
ance It? How many boys can make a
bow with the ends nicely bent and
worked down with a bit of broken
glass ?
“I Interviewed my young nephew the
other day and was thunderstruck to
discover that he knew nothing about it.
Could he make a water wheel, a wind
mill, an elder popgun, a jack o’ lantern,
a buzz wheel, an air gun from a goose
quflf with a sliced potato for ammuni
tion, a willow* whistle, a squirt gun?
No; he knew nothing about them.
“ ’But surely,’ I said, almost pathetic
ally, ‘you can make a cornstalk fiddle.’
“ ’Do you mean a violin, uncle?’
“Then I gave it up. I don’t believe
the youth of today know’ enough to
stick feathers in a corncob and throw ft
Into the air. I am going to write a book
some day upon the arts of childhood to
save them from utter annihilation.”—

Wool ami Hair.
The life and growth ol’ wool and hair
are not identical with the life of the
body, but they will grow’ after the
death of the animal in w’hose skin they
have taken root. The root of the hair
•xudes the hair pulp, w’hich is formed
into cells containing the pigment w’hich
gives color to the hair itself. 15aeh row
of these cells forms a ring. As the
rings of cells are pushed away from
the skin by the giving out of fresh
pulp from the roots (lie cells dry. form
ing scales w’hich curiously resemble
miniature fish scales. A hair is simply
• tong tube formed of these rings into
• sort of sheath. These “saw teeth,”
Whiefi the older writers mention as be
ing one of the characteristics of the
human hair, are formed by rings of
these dried up cells, which are very
flue and closely set.
float’s hair has a more rapid growth
■nd longer cells, so that it is less regu
lar and straight than that of the hu
man species; consequently it shows lit
tle of the toothlike edge. The hair of
the sheep of the common sort is irreg
ular, with a tendency to curl or wave,
but unlike that of the gont, shows
marked toothlike edges. Wool has
barbed projections along the “hairs,”
which is one of its distinguishing pe
culiarities. The “wool” of the negro is
really hair, but is less perfect than
straight hair. The same may he said
r '’kinky'' bah- In the white races.

Refinement looks ever -with <ll*p
proval upon heedless waste and need
less extravagance. She carefully
counts the cost and makes the most
of all material brought to her hand.
Consideration for others has made her
watchful, and nothing In her charge
ts squandered or wantonly consumed.
To vulgar ostentation she firmly re
ruses the radiant light of her counte
nance, but seeks Instead the quiet
nooks, the retired haunts where dwell
those who know her true worth. The
spirit of refinement lives even with
those whose tastes are simple and pure,
who make no pretonses, whose faith Id
humanity is strong and real. To those
endowed with kindly tact and genial
wit who employ all means of good
within their command, whose hearts
are touched by the grief and misery
around them and who are quick to see
and respond to others' wants—with
these, too. the spirit lives. They who
entertain this guest are clean in mind
and person, and the motto hung upon
the spiritual walls of home is "Clean!!,

Ink: as an Earache Core,
An amusing story Is told of a man
who was suddenly attacked in the
night by a violent fit of earache. His
wife told him that there was on the
window sill by the bed a bottle of
chloroform and recommended him to
rub some on his face.
Without striking a light he reached
out for the bottle, pulled out the stop
per and, pouring some of the contents
Into his hand, anointed his face from
mouth to ear. Very soon he announced
that the pain was better, lay down
again and went to sleep. He was
awakened !n the morning by a cry o?
horror from his wife.
"What is the matter?” he Inquired.
“Look at your face!” was the reply
A glance In the glass showed him that
bis face on one side was black as a
negro’s. The bottle which he had
grasped in the dark had contained not
chloroform, but ink.—Milwaukee Wi
