If there is a state law in this state
against gambling now is the time for
it to be enforced Here in Brunswick
game- of all kinds are being play ,

and we have seen grand jufors Atop

ENFORCE THE VAGRANCY LAW
Vhider the new vagrancy recently
enacted. Georgia lias the finest oppor
tunity in her history to rid itself In
a large measure of the loafing, vug
rani element which: inf<*sts the cities
and towns. Already in several cities
the aut hordes have commenced opei
otions under this law. and it begins
to look like the good effects of tin*
act will soon be felt throughout the
stale. •
Tliat the lawr should l-e enforced
vigorously is the general verdict ot
every law abiding citizen who has
given the matter any thought.
There is no reason why the people
of the great state of Geoi
longer maintain a great army of leaf
er and vagrant#. The man alio tan
work and won t work should he made
to work. This rule should be made to j
apply to all with equal force. Whins
and blacks should fare alike. The
authorities should exert all the efforts
at their command to see that none he
permuted to escape.
In this effort it would seem that
(very honest laboring man in the
state would give ! aid, support and
encouragement, for it is upon him
tiie burden of supporting the vagrants
rests. The man who toils is the man
who furnisho-s the idler with food
and raiment. lor tig- idler toils not
and yet he *I v-• "">1 a> anyone
ami on the labor of others.
There are many reasons why the
tailoring man should o, i u upon a
rigorous enforcement of this law.
He should do so because of tne divine
injunct ion that "In the sweat of the
face shall thou eat hreat," and lie
cause vagrancy and idl -ncss are tin'
great drawbacks to the developments
of the country.
Every dollar given a vagrant Is an
(■ncourageni-sit to others to become
number of vagrants also makes tin 1
vagrants. The maintaining of a large
children of this class devoid of am
bit ion. They grow to manhood and
womanhood without any of lie? sell
reliance and independanco which
char.verizes a thrifty community.
There are various other reasons why
vagrancy should he suppressed, but
one which should apiieal to the hon
est laboring man with more force than
any other, Is that every dollar the id
ler spends, and every mouthful that
he eats takes just that inuct from
his own individual support..
The authorities of other Georgia
rmnniuniiicH have already commen
ced to act under the luw ami it is
to be hoped Mint the authorities of
Brunswick will come out for a vig
(irons enforcement, of this law.
RELIGION AND THE NEWSPAPER.
II Is a noticeable fact, saysfthe Sa

journals probably realize, as only the
highly trained, inteliger* ol server of
public affairs does, how materialism,

our national standard of character mol

A thirst for money getting; the
passion for prosperity --mom y. the

commercial morality that deems any

penitentiaries full: Hie ethical effects
and side of Wall Street gambling in
imaginary values; the value of tern

being taken up in dead earnest and
