ROOSEVELT’S TRAVELS.
Some democratic papers, aided and
abetted by republican papers that are
hostile to the administration, are de
manding an investigation of the finan
cing of President's Roosevelt's re
cent 13.000 mile swing around the
country. We are told that there is
a good deal of quiet gossip iu Wash
ington to title effect that all the expen
ses of tlio tour, including 'wining, din
in.., trans|H>rtatli>n and what not were
b/orne by the rad road corporations
that had the honor of carrying the
president and his entourage over I heir
lines and tlint Invidious comparison:
are bating made between Mr. Roost
velt’s acceptance of courtcsiiy in ii
matter rind the (U’e.Tira*um of other
presidents to place themselves under
such obligations.
At tho same time at is admitted that
if Mr. Rotosevelt allowed the rail
roads to foot the bills be does not
occupy an altogether singular posi
tion.
, How many presidents 1 are in
either category we do not know, fait
there appears to lie no doubt that
President Cleveand paid all of his
own bills whenever he went on a tour.
It is said that he never used a private
ear without giving bis personal check
for the privilege of invitation. Aiul
that is undeniably the right principal;
for whether so Intended or not. ev
ery extended tour taken by a presi
dent is necessarily a junket in the
political interests of himself or the
'nieitwts of bis party. In our view,
■imply on the ground of appearance
of things, no man occupying the posi
non of president of the United States
—ethe most exalted position in gift of
the nation —has a right to journey over
live country at the expense of the rail
roans Precedent |is no excuse, es
pecially in view of the sp'ary paid the
president, and his prerequisites, if
it be true —that President Roosevelt
was as to all costs Cbe guest of the
railroads during the trip, he set a
very bad example and was guilty of
a grave indiscretion; but that is all
there is in it. for Theodore Roosevelt
is given to doing indiscreet things, and
whatever may be his indiscretions
and faults, believe him to be ab
solutely honest and incorruptible. By
some of his indiscretions he hart put
himself beyond the pale of our sym
pathy, but fairness compells the ad
mission that we do not for a moment
enlortain the suspicion that any cour
to.ties, however great, lit' may have ac
cepted from lho railroad corpora-
would unduly influence him.
1 1. uce vve consider that the effort to
stir a scandal out of his tour that will
injure him politically will prove abor
tive.

The Washington Poet says that as

ple Graves' explanation, he does not
advocate lynching, but is content to
endorse it It is mjflher advocacy
nor endorsement, but simply a frank
statement of ihe fact that, lynching
is .inevitably bound to follow negro
outrawes. and, that, if the north Is
seriously interested in puling fin end
lo the lynching of negroes, it should
busy iis,.,if in pulling air end to the
unspeakable crime which gives excuse
for lynching.
