AN AfrMY OF LAWYERS.
It is probable that no man who has
ever before been treed tried in South
Carolina has such an array of law
yers to defend him as has Tillman,
says the Chicago Chronicle. Imme
diately on securing the change of
venue to Lexington, the defense, hired
five lawyers of the Lexington bar, in
fact nerly 81l of the local talent in
the little town. Tillman will go t<
trial therefore defended by ten law
yers. He Is a lawyer himself and
takes an active part in his own de
fence, while Senator Tillman, who
prides himself on being a better law
yer than most of the practioncrs, will
sit in the case and make suggestions.
During the first month after the
trial statements were freely made that
Tillman would never be puished and
a white man cannot be convicted hut
those predictions are no longer to be
heard despite of the advantages the
defense gained in the last two legal
skirmishes. a

“There has been no assault or no

“So far as the report goes, the ne
groes have been behaving themselves
quite well indeed. But the ‘conserva
tive citizens’ of the place do not like
them and will not have them around.
“That Is ono way the north hart of

proving quite popular in several nor

And tills in the north where they

How the ArmadA Fought.
The Spanish officers behaved with
the desperate heroism which became
the countrymen of Cortes and Santa
Cruz, arid never did Spanish soldier or
seaman distinguish himself more than
on this tremendous day. There was no
flinching, though the blood was t eon
streaming out of the scuppers, l'r esta
went up and down under the honest
fire, crucifix In hand, confessing and
absolving the dying.
But the engagement from the find
preserved the same character which

useless to them. Their ships could do
turn or sail, their guns wro crushed
