The Several Tents Were
Crowded with Peo
ple Yesterday,
Alfter experiencing two or three
days of real "hard luck” the street
fair company Is now open In full
blast, and a real good business did
It enjoy yesterday. ,
The fair commenced yesterday after
noon at 1 o'clock and there were a
largo number of children, present to
enjoy the occasion.
The high dive did not come ofT as
was expected, and the little ones were
great! y"d i sappodnted. However, they
soon forgot about this free attraction
as there were so many other things ti
attract their attention
I-ast night the park was simply
crowded with people and every one of
the shows did a good business, espe
dally the merry-go-round and one or
two of the others which catches the
eye of the average colored person.
The fair will continue today and to
morrow beginning In the afternoon
at 1 o'clock.
Fourth Century Shorthand.
That shorthand was used In the an
cient world is well known, but our in
formation is still scanty, and any ad
dition Is weleome. !t may tliercforo
he worth knowing that there Is lu tho
Armenian “Arts of St. Culllstratus”
a reference to the employment of ste
nography. A translation of this is in
cluded In Mr. F. C. Conybeare’s “Ar
menian Apology and Acts of Apollo
nius and Other Monuments of marly
Christianity ” The account of Cal
llltratus whs probably written in the
first half of the fourth century. It in
cludes several long addresses of Calli
stratns to his fellow soldiers In expha
nation of the mysteries of the new
fnllh for which he and forty-nine of
his comrades became martyrs. Per
haps with a view to giving them jiu
thoriiy as verbatim reports, the com
piler says;
“llut there was a certain scribe of
the law court who was near to the
prison, and he listened lo the dlsconrso
of CalllstratUß, and he wrote it down
In shorthand on paper and gave It to
us, and we set In order with ail ac
curacy the record and outline of his
thought."

In 1840 or 1850 Charlotte Bronte
wrote of Thackeray: "To me the broad
brow seems to express intellect Cer
tain lines about the nose and cheek be
• tray the satirist and the cynic; the
mouth Indicates a childlike simplicity,
perhaps even a degree of lrresolutenesa
In consistency—weakness, In short, but
a weakness not unamlablc.” And Mr.
Motley, writing to his wife In 1858,
said: "I believe you have never seen
Thackeray. He has the appearance of
a colossal Infant—smooth, white, shln
i lug, ringlety hair, flaxen, alas, with ad
vancing years; u roundish lace with n
little dab of a nose, upon which it is a
perpetual wonder how ho keeps his
spectacles.”
This broken nose was always a source
of amusement to Thackeray himself.
He caricatured it in his drawing, he
frequently alluded to it In Ids speech
und in his letters, and he was fond of
repeating Douglas .lorrold’s remark to
him when he was to stand as godfather
to a friend's son, "Lord, Thackeray, I
hope you won’t present the child with
your own mug!”

SEA IS cum
INTO CUMBERAAND
Steps to be Taken at Once
By Government to
Offset Flow.
Steps will be taken at once by the
U. S. engineers to offset the force of
the ocean at Cumberland Inland, near
Fernandina harbor. The sea is cut
ting into the island so far that there
is danger of its making a wide beach
opposite St. Mary’s river, thus mak
ing an entrance to Fernandina north
of the present one.
There is also danger of its flanking
the present jetties. Col, Quinn the
chief engineer for this division
has been notified of the encroach
ment of the sea, asd will take steps
at once to offset it. Stone work will
he placed in position along the part
of the island, which is most in danger.

Most readers would be at a loss to
discover the source of some book titles
and would forget If they ever knew
that “The World Well Cost” Is bor
rowed from Dryden, that “A Dream
and a Forgetting” Is Wordsworth’s
phrase and that it was Othello who
loved “Not Wisely, hut Too Well.” We
might add that in spite of the famili
arity of the famous "Elegy” not one
reader in ten will trace Mr. Hardy’s
“Far From the Madding Crowd” to
Cray or will connect “One of Three’’
with the mariner who held the wed
ding guest with his glittering eye. Mr,
Hardy’s titles, like Howells', are al
most Invariably attractive. “A Pair of
Blue Eyes,” “Two on a Tower” and
“The Return of the Native” stimulate
curiosity.
Often a proverb or any other famil
iar phrase Is as good as a recognized
quotation. “Put Yourself In His Place”
and “It Is Never Too Late to Mend”
were strokes of genius on the part of
Charles Reade, and “Second Thoughts,”
“Dead Men’s Shoes” and “The Root of
All Evil” are hardly less Inviting.—

Little Emerson—Mamma, I find no
marginal note In elucidation of this
expression, which I observe frequently
to occur is my volume of “Fairy Tale
Classics”—“with bated breath.” What
Is the proper Interpretation of the
phrase?
Mamma—“With bated breath,” my
son, commonly occurs in fairy tales.
Tour father often returns from pisca
torial excursions with bated breath.
The phrase in such instances, howev
er, has no significance as applying to
the bait employed to allure the fish,
but is merely an elastic term of du
bious meaning and suspicious origin,
utilized, as I have already intimated,
simply because of the sanction which
It haß gained by customary usage in
fairy tales generally. Do you compre
hend. Emerson?
Little Emerson—Perfectly, mamma.
